Chapter 2 - The Shattered Facade

The hospital room temperature seemed to drop ten degrees the second Vanessa stormed through the doorway. Her designer bridal gown, meant for a fitting or a rehearsal dinner, was slightly crumpled at the hem. Her face was twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated panic and psychotic fury.
She pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at the transparent bassinet where my newborn daughter, Maya, lay sleeping peacefully.
“That baby shouldn’t be alive!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the sterile tile walls. “I paid to make sure she was never born!”
The entire room froze. My mother gasped, dropping a cup of water onto the floor where it shattered into a hundred jagged pieces. Two nurses standing near the doorway stepped back in sheer horror, their hands flying to their mouths.
Aaron spun around, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief. He stared at his bride-to-be as if he were looking at a complete stranger for the very first time. “What did you just say, Vanessa?” he asked, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.
Vanessa caught herself, her chest heaving as realization washed over her. The fiery rage in her eyes flickered into sheer terror. She looked around the room, seeing the cold, accusing stares of the nurses, the protective fury in my mother’s eyes, and the terrifying, dead-eyed realization dawning on Aaron’s face.
“I... I didn't mean that,” Vanessa stammered, taking a panicked step backward toward the corridor. “I’m stressed! The wedding is in three days! The pressure is getting to me, Aaron! You know how anxious I get!”
“Anxious?” Aaron stepped toward her, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. “You told me she lost the baby months ago! You told me she miscarried and left town! And then when I told you she just gave birth, you screamed, you fainted, and now you’re standing in a hospital room screaming that you paid to make sure my child was never born? Explain yourself, Vanessa! Right now!”
“She’s lying! She’s trying to ruin us!” Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking as she pointed a finger at me. “She tracked you down because she wants your money! She’s playing you, Aaron!”
“Get out,” I said.
My voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the chaos like a razor blade. I sat up slowly in the hospital bed, pulling the blanket over my lap, keeping my eyes locked on Vanessa’s frantic face.
“Get out of my room before I press charges for harassment and terroristic threats in a medical facility,” I continued, my voice steady and cold.
“You can’t do anything!” Vanessa cried, her composure completely unraveling as she realized her carefully constructed web of lies was burning down around her. “Aaron is mine! We are getting married on Saturday! You’re just a ghost from his past!”
“A ghost?” Aaron muttered darkly. He grabbed Vanessa by the arm, his grip firm, and hauled her toward the hallway outside the room. “We are done. The wedding is canceled. Security! Escort this woman out of the building immediately!”
“Aaron, no! You can’t do this to me!” Vanessa wailed as two burly hospital security guards materialized in the doorway, grabbing her by both arms and dragging her kicking and screaming down the corridor. Her desperate cries faded into the distance until the heavy doors swung shut, plunging the room back into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Aaron stood in the doorway for a long moment, staring down at his empty hands. Then, slowly, he turned back around and walked into the room. He looked broken, a pale ghost of the ambitious man who had walked out on me six months ago.

He stopped at the foot of my bed, unable to meet my eyes.
“Claire,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “I am so, so sorry.”
