Chapter 5 - The Corporate Fallout

By Thursday morning, the scandal had blown wide open across the financial news networks and local headlines.

TECH HEIR’S WEDDING CANCELED AMID SHOCKING POLICE RAID; FIANCÉE LINKED TO CONSPIRACY INVESTIGATION.

Vanessa Sterling—born Vanessa Vance, daughter of prominent venture capitalist Arthur Vance—was arrested at her penthouse apartment in downtown Manhattan at dawn. Federal and local agents executed search warrants, seizing hard drives, financial ledgers, and burner phones that corroborated every single suspicion Detective Vance had raised.

True to his word, Aaron hadn’t just hired separate legal counsel; he had effectively severed all ties with his former father-in-law’s conglomerate. He resigned as senior partner of Sterling-Vance Enterprises, forfeiting millions in stock options and executive bonuses to distance himself entirely from the corrupt empire Vanessa’s family had built.

I was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon. Instead of returning to my small, cramped apartment, Aaron insisted—with the reluctant blessing of my mother—that we stay at his private estate in Westchester County, which he had entirely secured with private security details.

“You’re not stepping foot anywhere near an unsecured building until Vanessa is behind bars for good,” Aaron insisted as he loaded our bags into the back of his SUV.

“Aaron, I can’t live in your mansion indefinitely,” I sighed, adjusting Maya’s car seat. “I have my own life, my own job—”

“You are on maternity leave, Claire, and your job can wait,” Aaron interrupted gently, opening the car door for me. “Please. Let me do this. Let me protect you. It’s the least I can do.”

The estate in Westchester was a sprawling, secluded sanctuary surrounded by towering oak trees and iron security gates. Inside, Aaron had converted a large guest suite into a nursery complete with top-of-the-line equipment, custom cribs, and pastel-painted walls.

For the first few days, life settled into a strange, peaceful rhythm. Aaron was a transformed man. He woke up every three hours for night feedings, pacing the hallways with Maya resting against his chest, humming soft lullabies. He cooked meals for my mother and me, refusing to let us lift a finger.

Yet, despite his unwavering dedication, the ghost of our past still hung heavily in the air.

On Sunday evening, while Maya was sleeping soundly, Aaron knocked softly on the nursery door and stepped inside. He held a thick manila folder in his hands.

“Claire? Are you awake?”

“I’m awake,” I said, sitting in the rocking chair by the window. “What’s in the folder?”

Aaron walked over and handed it to me. “Detective Vance dropped this off an hour ago. The district attorney’s office has officially filed formal charges against Vanessa. Extortion, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit assault, and falsification of legal documents.”

I opened the folder, scanning the legal jargon. “Is she going away?”

“For a long time,” Aaron said grimly. “Her father tried to pull strings, but the federal investigators found evidence that she was embezzling from her own family’s venture capital fund to finance private investigators to stalk you during your pregnancy. Her father cut her loose this afternoon. She has no allies left.”

I closed the folder and looked up at him. “And what about you, Aaron? What happens to you now?”

“I’m liquidating my remaining shares in the firm,” Aaron said without hesitation. “I’m starting fresh. A boutique consulting firm where I set my own hours, where I don't have to travel, and where I can be home every single night for dinner.”

He knelt down beside my chair, resting his hands on the armrests, looking up at me with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.

“I know I lost the right to ask for a second chance a long time ago,” Aaron whispered. “I know I chose ambition over our family, and I will regret that every day of my life. But seeing you with Maya... realizing what I almost missed... Claire, I love you. I never stopped loving you. If there is any way—any way at all—that you can ever forgive me... I want to spend the rest of my life earning back your trust.”
