Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The shattered plastic cup on the floor had been cleaned up by a nurse, but the tension in the room remained as sharp as broken glass. My mother stood guard beside my bed, her arms crossed defensively, glaring daggers at Aaron.

“You’ve done enough damage, Aaron,” my mother snapped, her voice shaking with restrained rage. “Leave. Before I call the police myself.”

“Please, Mrs. Davis,” Aaron pleaded, his voice cracking as he looked at my mother, then back at me. “Just... give me five minutes. Please. I had no idea. I swear to God, I had no idea what she was doing.”

I looked at him, searching his face for the man I had loved, the man who had promised to build a future with me before corporate ambition blinded him. What I saw wasn't arrogance anymore. It was guilt, shock, and a terrifying realization of how deeply he had been manipulated.

“Mom, give us a minute,” I murmured softly.

My mother stared at me in disbelief. “Claire, you can’t possibly—”

“Just outside, Mom. Please.”

Reluctantly, my mother shot Aaron one final murderous glare before walking out into the hallway, pulling the door closed behind her.

The room fell quiet again, save for the soft rhythmic hum of the heart monitor and baby Maya’s gentle breathing in her crib.

Aaron slowly walked closer to the bed, dropping his head into his hands. He dragged his fingers through his hair, letting out a ragged sigh.

“Tell me,” I said quietly. “Start from the beginning. How did you end up with someone like that, and how did she convince you I lost our baby?”

Aaron sat down heavily on the edge of the visitor’s chair, staring at his palms. “After we split up... I was drowning in work. You know how my firm was. Promotions, board meetings, travel. Vanessa was a senior partner’s daughter. She practically forced herself into my social circle. She was attentive, organized, always making sure my schedule was clear. She made herself indispensable.”

“And when I told you I was pregnant?” I asked, my voice hardening.

“When you told me, I was terrified,” Aaron admitted, his voice dropping to a whisper. “I reacted out of fear. I was an idiot, Claire. I thought a child would derail everything I worked for. But a month later, when I tried to call you to talk... Vanessa intercepted my phone.”

My eyes narrowed. “What?”

“She took my phone while I was sleeping,” Aaron continued, looking up at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “She found your number. She blocked you, and then... she used a burner app to send me a text message from a number she claimed was yours. The message said you had a miscarriage, that you blamed me, and that you never wanted to see or hear from me again.”

I stared at him, my stomach churning. “You didn't call me to verify? You didn't come to the house?”

“I tried!” Aaron choked out, his voice breaking. “I drove to your apartment complex three times. But Vanessa had hired a private security guard to sit outside your building under the guise of ‘protecting my professional reputation.’ She told the guard I wasn't allowed near you, and she intercepted every piece of mail. She built a wall around me, Claire. She isolated me from everyone who mattered.”

“And the wedding?”

“Her father’s firm was merging with mine,” Aaron said bitterly. “The wedding was a corporate merger disguised as a romance. She rushed it. She pushed for this weekend because she knew if we got married, her hooks would be permanent. She made me call you today just to gloat—to prove to herself that she had completely erased you from my life.”

“And instead, she walked right into her own nightmare,” I said coldly.

“She’s going to prison,” Aaron said, his jaw tightening with sudden resolve. “What she said just now... about paying to make sure your baby wasn't born... Claire, I think she tried to do something to you while you were pregnant.”

My blood ran cold. I instinctively pulled Maya’s bassinet closer to the bed.
