Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The following morning, the Hartwell estate was a powder keg. By 8:00 AM, the board of directors had already received an anonymous, encrypted dossier detailing the land acquisition fraud from 1995. Camille Rourke, still trapped in the guest wing, was frantic, her phone blowing up with frantic messages from her investors as rumors of a "corporate implosion" began to circulate.
In the East Wing, Mara awoke to a sense of unreality. The room was sprawling, filled with antique velvet and gilded mirrors, but her mind was on the man in the library. She found Julian standing on the terrace, staring at the sunrise. He had not slept.
“The board is calling for an emergency meeting,” he said without turning around. His voice was raspy, stripped of its usual iron control. “They think I’ve suffered a breakdown. They’re planning to trigger the 'incapacity clause' in my contract to strip me of my CEO title.”

Mara walked up to him, the silver hummingbird still resting on the nightstand in her room—a silent, heavy sentinel. “Why are you doing this, Julian? You could have just given me money, sent me away, and kept your throne. Why burn it all down?”
Julian turned. The shadows under his eyes were deep, but his gaze was clear. “Because for the first time in my life, I don't feel like a cog in a machine. My father taught me to acquire. You, and this charm... you taught me to belong. If I have to lose the empire to regain my soul, it’s a bargain I’ll make every day of the week.”
