Chapter 5 - Threat in the Night

At two o'clock in the morning, the peaceful silence of the coastal estate was shattered by the harsh glare of headlights flashing through the library windows.
Abigail, who had been unable to sleep, was sitting by the window in a plush armchair, watching the ocean. She stood up in a panic as three dark SUVs pulled up to the security gates outside the property.
Moments later, Adrian appeared in the hallway, fully dressed in a crisp black shirt and trousers, looking as sharp and alert as if it were midday.
"Stay upstairs with the girls, Abigail," he instructed calmly.
"Who is that?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Eleanor," Adrian replied, his voice deadly quiet. "She brought the local county sheriff. She’s trying to play her last card."
Abigail hurried to the top of the grand staircase, crouching behind the dark wood balustrade so she could watch. Through the tall glass front doors, she saw Eleanor Voss stepping out of an SUV, flanked by two armed police officers and a man in an expensive suit carrying a manila folder.
Adrian opened the grand front door himself, standing tall on the stone porch, blocking the entrance completely.
"Adrian!" Eleanor called out, her voice loud and melodramatic, designed to sound like a distraught grandmother. "Thank goodness you’re here. That hysterical woman stole my grand-daughters in the middle of the afternoon! I have a court order for emergency temporary custody due to child endangerment!"
The sheriff stepped forward, looking uncomfortable. "Mr. Hale, we have a warrant signed by Judge Miller to retrieve the three Mercer children and return them to Mrs. Voss’s care."
Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't even look at the sheriff. He stared directly at Eleanor with a cold, terrifying smile.
"Judge Miller," Adrian said slowly. "How interesting. Isn't Judge Miller the same man whose re-election campaign received a fifty-thousand-dollar contribution from the Voss Outreach Fund last spring?"
The sheriff blinked, looking uneasy. "Sir, I just have to enforce the order—"
"You will enforce nothing on my private property, Sheriff," Adrian interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute command. "Arthur?"
Arthur Vance stepped out from behind Adrian, holding a thick leather folder. He handed a single sheet of paper to the sheriff.
"This is an emergency stay of execution issued forty minutes ago by State Supreme Court Justice Harrison," Arthur said smoothly. "It revokes Judge Miller's jurisdiction due to conflict of interest. Furthermore, we have filed formal federal complaints against Eleanor Voss for child abuse, unlawful confinement, and corporate fraud."
Eleanor’s face turned bright red, her composure shattering into ugly rage. "You arrogant bastard! You can't do this! She is my daughter-in-law! She belongs on my property!"
"She belongs nowhere near you," Adrian said, stepping down one stone step toward her. "And if you set foot on this peninsula again, Eleanor, I will have you arrested for criminal trespass before your driver can put the car in reverse."
"You think you’re invincible because you have billions?" Eleanor shrieked, her voice echoing into the night air. "I will destroy her! I will tell the press she stole millions from dying women! She will spend the rest of her life in federal prison!"
"Try it," Adrian replied softly. "Please. Give me a reason to release the forensic audit to the FBI six hours earlier than planned."
Eleanor froze. The threat was crystal clear. She glared up at the massive mansion, her eyes catching Abigail standing at the top of the stairs behind the glass window.

For the first time, Abigail didn't avert her eyes. She stood tall, holding her head high, watching her former tormentor realize that her power was completely gone.
Without another word, Eleanor turned on her heel, slammed her SUV door, and sped off into the darkness, leaving the sheriff awkwardly apologizing to Adrian before driving away.
