Chapter 7 - The Trap Is Set

The Charleston Grand Ballroom was draped in silk, crystal chandeliers, and white orchids. Over four hundred of the state’s most influential politicians, business moguls, and socialites filled the room.
Eleanor Voss arrived wearing an emerald green silk gown, her diamond necklace sparkling under the lights. She moved through the crowd with practiced grace, accepting praise and congratulations from everyone she met. Despite her anger over the events two nights prior, she felt confident. Her lawyers had assured her that Adrian Hale couldn't prove anything in court before the gala ended.
She took her seat at the head table, raising a champagne glass to her supporters.
Suddenly, the house lights dimmed.
The crowd fell quiet, assuming the award ceremony was about to begin. A large spotlight swung toward the main stage, where the President of the Philanthropy Board stood behind a podium.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," the man said into the microphone. "Before we present tonight's main honor, our keynote sponsor, Mr. Adrian Hale, has asked to present a special video tribute."
Eleanor smiled triumphantly, taking a slow sip of her champagne. She assumed Adrian had backed down, fearing public scandal, and was now offering a corporate truce.
The massive projection screen behind the stage flickered to life.
But instead of a promotional video for the Voss Outreach Fund, a bank ledger appeared on the screen—magnified so clearly that every person in the room could read the numbers.
At the top of the document were the words: Voss Outreach Fund - Illegal Diversion Logs.
Gasps erupted across the room. Eleanor dropped her champagne glass, the liquid spilling across her emerald dress.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Eleanor shouted, standing up and waving her arms toward the tech booth. "Turn that off! Turn it off right now!"
The screen changed. A video began playing.
It was high-definition security footage taken from inside Eleanor’s mansion three days ago. The audio was crystal clear, echoing loudly through the ballroom speakers:
“I told you to keep them upstairs... Three girls cannot preserve a family name, and yet I have fed and sheltered them for six years.”
The sound of Eleanor’s hand slapping Abigail across the face reverberated through the silent, horrified hall, followed by the loud smash of the coffee cup on the marble floor.
The entire ballroom turned to look at Eleanor in sheer horror. Wealthy donors pulled their hands away from her; politicians backed away as if she were contagious.

"That's fake! That's a deepfake!" Eleanor shrieked, her face turning crimson. "Guard! Stop this!"
The doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.
