Chapter 4 - The Privilege of Standing Together

Three days later, Saturday arrived with a crisp breeze and bright sunshine.

Owen had arranged a quiet meeting at a public community park—a neutral ground where Sarah could feel safe. Under the guise of a playdate that Liam had relentlessly requested, Sarah had hesitantly agreed to bring Lily.

When Sarah arrived, wearing her faded coat but carrying herself with the same rigid dignity, she found Owen sitting on a wooden bench, holding two paper cups of hot chocolate. Liam and Lily immediately dashed toward the jungle gym, their laughter ringing out over the park.

“You don’t have to buy us hot chocolate, Owen,” Sarah said softly, taking a seat at the far end of the bench.

“I didn’t buy it for you,” Owen said with a slight smirk, handing her a cup. “I bought it for me, but the barista insisted on a buy-one-get-one special. I’d hate for good cocoa to go to waste.”

Sarah looked at the cup, then at Owen, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through her cautious exterior. “You’re terrible at lying, you know that?”

“I’m a CEO, Sarah. Lying is usually more expensive,” Owen replied smoothly.

They watched the children play in silence for a few minutes before Owen turned to her, his tone shifting into something deeper, more serious.

“Sarah, I know about Julian Croft.”

Sarah’s entire body went rigid. The warmth left her face in an instant, replaced by a defensive wall of stone. She set the cocoa cup down on the bench.

“Did you follow me?” she asked, her voice dangerously quiet. “Is this what this is? A rich man playing savior for a charity case?”

“No,” Owen said calmly, refusing to flinch from her sharp gaze. “I noticed a car watching you outside the diner. I have security personnel because of my position, and I asked them to check if you were in danger. That led to Croft.”

Sarah stood up abruptly, her hands trembling. “You don’t know anything about my life, Owen! Croft has lawyers, politicians, and private investigators in his pocket. Every time someone tries to 'help' me, he destroys them! He took my husband’s legacy, he took my home, and now he’s trying to take my daughter! I don’t need your pity!”

“I don’t offer pity, Sarah,” Owen said, standing up to match her height, though he kept his hands in his pockets to remain non-threatening. “Pity is cheap. It’s what people give when they want to feel good about themselves without taking any real risk.”

He took a step closer, his eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity.

“I offer respect. I saw a mother protecting her child with everything she had, refusing to surrender her dignity even when she had nothing left. I don’t want to give you a hand-out. I want to give you a fighting chance.”

Before Sarah could respond, a dark SUV pulled up to the curb beside the park. Two men in sharp dark suits stepped out, walking directly toward the playground. One of them held a legal binder, while the other carried an official envelope.

“Sarah Miller?” the lead man called out coldly. “You’ve been served with an emergency court order regarding the temporary custody of Lily Miller, pending financial review.”

Sarah gasped, her breath catching in her throat as she instinctively darted toward the playground where Lily was playing. “No! You can’t do this!”

The second man stepped in front of her, blocking her path. “Stand back, ma’am. We have officers on standby—”

Before the man could finish his sentence, Owen stepped between Sarah and the process server. The authority radiating from Owen was so sudden and overwhelming that both men instinctively halted.

“Who do you work for?” Owen demanded, his voice dropping into a register that had humbled boardrooms across the country.

“This is a private legal matter, sir,” the process server sneered. “Step aside, or you’ll be charged with obstruction.”

Owen pulled out his phone, pressed a single speed-dial button, and placed it on speaker.

“Marcus,” Owen said coldly into the phone. “Call Chief Counsel Vance. Tell him Julian Croft’s legal team is attempting an illegal emergency custody seizure on public property without a judge’s wet signature. Have our legal team file an immediate injunction against Croft Enterprises and order a full audit of every firm associated with this server.”

The process server’s face drained of color. “Wait... who are you?”

Owen looked at the man with cold, unyielding eyes. “I’m Owen Marsh. And if you take one step closer to that child, I will buy the firm you work for by noon and fire you before lunch.”
