Chapter 6 - War in the Boardroom

The declaration of war was immediate.
Within forty-eight hours, Julian Croft struck back. Articles began circulating in local business journals, implying that Owen Marsh was abusing his corporate power to conduct a hostile takeover of Croft Enterprises’ patents, using a vulnerable widow as a front.
The Marsh Dynamics Board of Directors panicked. An emergency board meeting was called for Thursday morning.
The boardroom on the 40th floor was filled with high-powered executives, stockholders, and legal representatives. At the head of the long oak table sat Owen, calm and composed. Beside him, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit provided by Owen’s team, sat Sarah Miller.
“This is insanity, Owen!” yelled Arthur Pendelton, one of the senior board members. “Croft is threatening a multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit! The media is having a field day! You brought a dry-cleaner into our corporate strategy meeting!”
Sarah didn't flinch. She stood up from her chair, her posture as straight and unyielding as it had been in the diner booth.
“I am not just a dry-cleaner, Mr. Pendelton,” Sarah said, her voice ringing clear across the room. “I am a mechanical engineer with a master’s degree from Ohio State. I co-designed the thermal storage algorithms with my late husband.”
The boardroom fell dead silent.
Sarah pulled a digital tablet from her briefcase and connected it to the main boardroom display. Images of complex architectural schematics and thermal fluid dynamics lit up the screen.
“For two years, Julian Croft has claimed that Daniel’s design suffered from a structural instability that required Croft Enterprises’ proprietary modification,” Sarah explained, stepping toward the screen with total authority. “That was a lie designed to justify seizing the patent. Here is the original mathematical model, which I kept hidden on an encrypted server before Croft confiscated our home servers.”
She tapped the screen, highlighting a series of equations.
“This algorithm solves the thermal degradation problem completely. It is worth tens of millions of dollars. And Croft doesn't own it—because he never understood it.”
The board members leaned forward, their cynical expressions melting into astonishment as they analyzed the data. Owen watched Sarah with a quiet pride swelling in his chest. She didn't need his wealth to win; she only needed the platform to be heard.
Suddenly, the doors of the boardroom burst open.

Julian Croft himself strode into the room, flanked by two corporate attorneys and police officers. Croft was a tall, silver-haired man whose arrogant demeanor usually intimidated everyone in his path.
“This meeting is over!” Croft shouted, holding up a legal document. “Sarah Miller is under investigation for corporate espionage and theft of trade secrets from Croft Enterprises! Officers, arrest her!”
