Chapter 5 - The Interrogation of Martha Vance

Deep beneath the main structure of Northwood Manor lay a subterranean network of reinforced concrete rooms, originally built during the Cold War as a bomb shelter, now repurposed as a high-security tactical command center.

Claire sat in a monitoring room lined with security screens, watching the live video feed from Detention Room B. Lily was fast asleep in an adjoining rest room under the watchful eye of a female security guard whom Lily had explicitly signed was "SAFE."

On the monitor screen, Martha Vance sat tied to a steel chair in the center of a windowless concrete cell. Her polished appearance was entirely gone; her gray hair hung in loose strands, and her eyes darted frantically around the room.

The heavy steel door of the cell opened, and Grant walked inside, followed by Victor. Grant didn't sit down. He stood over Martha like an executioner.

"Twenty-five years, Martha," Grant said, his voice dead of all emotion. "My father paid for your daughter’s cancer treatment. I paid for your grandson’s Harvard tuition. You had full access to my family, my home, and my daughter."

Martha began to weep, her shoulders shaking violently. "Grant... please... you don't understand..."

"I understand that you stole my dead wife's pressed orchid from my daughter's nightstand," Grant said softly, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "I understand that you gave it to a Russian hitman so he could lure my deaf daughter into a black sedan."

"They have my grandson!" Martha sobbed, her voice echoing harshly off the concrete walls. "Mikhail Markov... he took Leo three weeks ago! They sent me a finger, Grant! A finger!"

Grant didn't flinch. "You should have come to me."

"How could I?!" Martha screamed in desperation. "They said if I told you, they would send me his head! All they wanted was the schedule! They promised me they wouldn't hurt Lily! They said they just wanted to hold her for twenty-four hours to force you to sign the Newark port leases! They swore she wouldn't be harmed!"

Victor stepped forward, slamming a folder onto the metal table. "Who was your contact, Martha? Who took the orchid from you?"

"A man named Lev," Martha whispered, her chest heaving. "He operates out of the warehouse district in Greenpoint. He told me... he told me the plan was foolproof. He said someone inside the Whitmore organization had already cleared the security route."

Grant caught the detail instantly. "What do you mean 'already cleared the route'?"

Martha looked up, tears pouring down her aged cheeks. "Lev knew the security codes before I ever gave him the schedule, Grant! He knew the shift rotations of your guards! He knew which cameras had blind spots along the Long Island Expressway! I didn't give him that information! Someone else did!"

In the monitoring room, Claire leaned closer to the screen.

Martha wasn't the master architect of the treason. She was merely a blackmailed pawn used to deliver the physical bait—the orchid. The real mole inside Grant’s inner circle was someone much higher up. Someone who possessed complete authority over security logistics, camera rotations, and guard shifts.

Claire’s eyes drifted to the monitor displaying the main security control room on the floor above.

Standing at the master console was Victor’s second-in-command, a sharp-looking man named Julian, who was currently uploading security logs to an external drive.

Claire stood up from her chair in the monitoring room. She walked quickly out into the hallway and headed toward the stairs leading up to the main control room.

As she reached the top of the stairs, she saw Julian standing near the server rack, talking quietly into a sleek, unflagged satellite phone.

"The backup plan is compromised," Julian whispered into the phone, his back turned to the staircase. "The baker woman translated the kid’s signs. Martha is in the basement right now spilling everything. Execute the thermal override on the north gate now. We move in ten minutes."

Claire's heart plummeted into her stomach.

Julian wasn't just downloading logs. He was disabling the estate's perimeter defenses from the inside.

Claire backed away slowly, her shoes making no sound against the carpeted floor. But as she turned the corner toward the stairs, her hip caught a decorative brass vase sitting on a side table.

The vase wobbled and hit the floor with a loud, metallic thud.

Julian spun around instantly, his hand dropping to his sidearm. His eyes locked onto Claire.

"Well, well," Julian said, a cold, ruthless smile spreading across his face as he drew his weapon. "The baker with the quick hands."
