Chapter 7 - Silent Shadows

The utility shaft beneath the kitchen was cramped, dark, and smelled of rust and cold concrete. Claire squeezed her full-figured frame through the narrow metal ladder system, her hands slipping against the damp rungs as the thunder of explosions echoed from the floors above.

Her body ached, her lungs burned, and fear threatened to paralyze her with every step. But every time she felt like giving up, she pictured Lily’s small hands signing against the bakery window: THAT MAN IS NOT MY DRIVER.

Lily had trusted her. Eleanor had trusted her. She wasn't going to let them down.

Claire reached the bottom of the shaft and pushed open the metal access grate, stepping into the dim service corridor that led to Detention Room B and the adjoining rest quarters.

The hallway was eerily quiet compared to the war zone above.

Claire crept along the wall, staying in the shadows. As she approached the heavy steel door of the rest room, she saw the female guard lying motionless on the concrete floor, a single gunshot wound to her chest.

The biometric lock panel beside the door was flashing green.

The door was standing half-open.

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked around frantically for a weapon. The guard's sidearm was gone, but sitting on a nearby maintenance cart was a heavy steel pipe wrench. Claire grabbed the iron tool with both hands, lifting it over her shoulder.

She tiptoed to the doorway and peered inside.

Julian was inside the room. He had his back turned to the door, kneeling beside a small closet where Lily was huddled in the dark, clutching her knees to her chest, her eyes wide with terror.

Julian had his pistol holstered, holding out a pair of zip-ties.

"Come on, kid," Julian said, his voice laced with cruel impatience. "Don't make this hard. Your daddy is dying upstairs right now. You’re coming with me to see Mikhail."

Lily didn't move. She couldn't hear his words, but she saw the murder in his eyes.

Suddenly, Lily’s eyes flicked past Julian’s shoulder, locking onto Claire standing in the doorway.

A flash of recognition and hope illuminated the little girl's face.

Claire instantly raised her hand outside Julian's field of vision, signing one simple command:

COVER YOUR EYES.

Lily didn't hesitate. She buried her face into her knees, pressing her hands tightly over her eyes.

Julian frowned in confusion. "What are you doing, you little freak—"

Before Julian could turn around, Claire stepped into the room and swung the heavy steel wrench with every ounce of momentum her body possessed.

CRACK.

The heavy iron tool struck Julian square across the side of his tactical helmet and neck.

Julian let out a choked cry, stumbling sideways into a row of metal lockers. He dropped to his knees, dazed, blood pouring from his ear. He fumbled frantically for his holstered sidearm.

"NO YOU DON'T!" Claire screamed.

She threw her full body weight into him, tackling the grown tactical operative onto the concrete floor. They crashed hard against the lockers. Julian swung an elbow back, hitting Claire hard across her jaw. Pain exploded behind her eyes, and the taste of copper filled her mouth, but Claire refused to let go.

She grabbed the collar of his tactical vest, pinning his arm beneath her body while slamming the heavy iron wrench down onto his hand, crushing his fingers against the floor.

Julian screamed in agony, dropping the pistol.

Claire kicked the gun across the room, straight into the open closet where Lily was sitting.

"Lily! The gun!" Claire yelled, forgetting for a split second that the child couldn't hear her.

But Lily didn't need to hear. She saw the weapon slide to her feet. With surprising quickness, the eight-year-old grabbed the heavy pistol with both hands, raised it, and pointed the barrel directly at Julian’s head.

Julian froze on the floor beneath Claire. His breath hitched in his throat as he looked into the cold, dark eyes of the eight-year-old girl he had underestimated.

Lily’s finger rested on the trigger. Her hands were surprisingly steady. She looked at Julian not with the fear of an innocent child, but with the cold, absolute vengeance of a Whitmore.
