Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

"Lily, no!" Claire gasped, her voice hoarse as she pinned Julian’s crushed hand to the floor.
Claire raised one hand, keeping her body pressed against Julian, and signed frantically with her free fingers: LOOK AT ME, LILY. LOOK AT CLAIRE.
Lily’s eyes didn't move at first. They remained locked on Julian's face, her small finger applying pressure to the trigger. The heavy slide of the pistol was trembling slightly under her small weight, but her intent was clear.
LILY! PLEASE! Claire signed again, her movements sharp and insistent. DON'T DO THIS. LET ME. YOU ARE GOOD. DON'T BE LIKE THEM.
Slowly, painfully, Lily’s gaze shifted away from Julian and met Claire’s eyes.
Claire offered a gentle, reassuring nod, her eyes filled with warmth despite the blood dripping from her bruised jaw. PUT IT DOWN, BABY. CLAIRE IS HERE.
Lily’s chest heaved with shuddering breaths. A single tear tracked through the dust on her cheek. Slowly, she lowered the heavy handgun, resting it on her lap, though she kept her eyes fixed on the traitor.
Before Julian could attempt another move, the heavy steel door of the rest room was kicked wide open.
Grant Whitmore stepped inside.
He was covered in soot, blood splattered across his dark coat, his primary assault rifle steaming from rapid fire. Behind him stood Victor, wounded in the arm but alive and holding the hallway perimeter. The assault upstairs had been brutally repelled; the remaining mercenary force had been wiped out or captured.
Grant’s eyes scanned the room instantly: Julian pinned under Claire’s heavy frame, the iron wrench covered in blood, and his daughter holding a gun in her lap.
A terrifying, murderous darkness filled Grant’s eyes as he looked down at his former second-in-command.
"Get off him, Claire," Grant said, his voice dropping into an octave that sounded entirely inhuman.
Claire scrambled off Julian, rushing over to Lily and wrapping her broad arms around the child, pulling her close and turning her face away from the center of the room.
Grant walked over to Julian. He didn't ask questions. He didn't demand explanations. He simply reached down, grabbed Julian by his tactical vest, lifted the grown man off the floor with one arm, and dragged him out into the corridor.
"Victor," Grant said softly as he stepped into the hallway. "Clear the room. Take Miss Dawson and my daughter to the secure vehicle in the underground garage."
"And Julian, sir?" Victor asked grimly.
"He is going to tell me where Mikhail Markov is hiding," Grant said, his eyes hollow and black. "And then he is going to cease to exist."
A heavy steel door slammed shut down the corridor, followed by the muffled, terrifying screams of a man realizing too late the true magnitude of his mistake.
In the rest room, Claire held Lily tightly against her chest, rocking her gently back and forth. Lily pressed her face into Claire’s shoulder, her small hands clutching Claire’s torn apron.
"It's over, sweetie," Claire whispered, kissing the top of the little girl's head. "It's over."
Ten minutes later, Victor escorted Claire and Lily down a hidden subterranean tunnel that opened into an underground garage carved deep into the seaside cliffs. Waiting there was an armored executive van, idling silently.
Victor opened the door for them. His face was pale, his eyes showing a newfound, immense respect as he looked at Claire.
"Miss Dawson," Victor said, bowing his head slightly. "I misjudged you at the bakery. You fought like a lioness for that child."
"I did what any decent person would do," Claire said, sitting inside the comfortable leather interior of the van with Lily on her lap.
"No," Victor corrected her gently. "Most people run. You stood your ground against an armed assassin with a maintenance wrench. Eleanor chose well when she put your initials in that compass."
Victor handed her a bottle of water and a clean, warm towel. "Mr. Whitmore will join us shortly. We are relocating to a safehouse in Manhattan. The Northwood compound is no longer secure."
As the armored van pulled out of the cliffside garage and sped onto the rain-slicked highway, Claire looked out the window at the burning gates of Northwood Manor in the distance.

She was bruised, battered, and exhausted beyond measure. But as she looked down at the child sleeping safely in her lap, she knew that the quiet, simple life she had known in her bakery was officially gone forever.
She was in the inner circle now. And the war was far from over.
