Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

The night air over Sunset Park was thick with the bitter smell of coal smoke and wet asphalt.

Inside the fourth-floor walk-up apartment, the pink lamp shaped like the moon cast a soft, comforting glow across the narrow bed. Lily was fast asleep, clutching her brown teddy bear against her chest, exhausted by the strange and wonderful afternoon she had spent holding her father’s hand in Central Park.

Sarah sat at the small kitchen table, staring out the window at the brick wall across the fire escape. Her mind was a whirlwind of terrifying possibilities. She had spoken with Aleandro for only twenty minutes after the emotional exchange at the fountain—twenty hurried, desperate minutes where he had sworn on his life that he would protect them, that the invisible walls he had built around them were no longer enough, and that he was coming to bring them home.

“Pack a bag,” he had told her, his gray eyes burning with fierce determination. “Vincent will be at your door by midnight to move you to the Manhattan penthouse. I’m ending this tonight.”

A sudden, sharp rap sounded at the apartment door.

Not the polite knock of a neighbor, but three heavy, rhythmic strikes of steel against wood.

Sarah’s heart seized. She checked her watch—it was only 11:15 PM. Vincent wasn't supposed to arrive for another forty-five minutes.

“Who is it?” Sarah called out, her voice trembling slightly as she stood up from the table.

“Apartment inspection, Mrs. Bennett,” a gruff, unfamiliar voice answered from the hallway. “Open the door.”

Sarah backed away toward the hallway. She reached into her pocket for her phone, but before her fingers could find the screen, the wooden door splintered inward with a deafening crash.

CRACK!

The deadbolt housing shattered. Three heavy-set men in black tactical gear and ski masks swarmed into the cramped apartment.

Sarah screamed, rushing toward the bedroom door to shield Lily, but one of the operatives grabbed her by the arm, spinning her around and shoving her against the kitchen counter with brutal efficiency.

“Keep your mouth shut, lady, and nobody gets hurt,” the lead operative growled, pressing a zip-tie around her wrists.

“Please! My daughter is in there! Leave her alone!” Sarah sobbed, struggling against the plastic binding as tears streamed down her face.

“Shut her up!” another operative snapped, throwing a canvas sack over Sarah’s head and lifting her bodily off her feet.

As they carried her toward the shattered doorway, the bedroom door creaked open. Lily stood rubbing her eyes in her pink pajamas, clutching her teddy bear.

“Mama?” the little girl whispered into the dark apartment.

Before the operatives could grab the child, a heavy figure stepped out of the stairwell shadows.

Vincent Russo stood in the doorway, his scarred face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury. In his hands, he held a suppressed automatic pistol aimed squarely at the masked men.

“Drop her,” Vincent commanded, his voice like grinding tectonic plates.

The lead operative dropped Sarah onto the floor and drew his own weapon. But Vincent was faster. Two suppressed cracks echoed through the hallway, and the two operatives crumpled instantly.

The third operative grabbed Sarah, holding a knife against her throat. “Drop your piece, old man, or I slit her throat right now!”

Vincent’s finger hovered on the trigger, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently.

Suddenly, a shot rang out from behind Vincent in the stairwell.

The third operative’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed to the floor, releasing Sarah.

Stepping out of the shadows of the stairwell, lowering a smoking pistol, was Marco Bellini.

Sarah gasped for air, crawling toward the bedroom where Lily was crying. Vincent lowered his weapon slowly, turning to look at his longtime associate with profound suspicion.

“Marco,” Vincent said, his voice dangerously low. “What are you doing here?”

Marco smiled, sliding his pistol back into his shoulder holster. He looked down at the fallen mercenaries, then up at Vincent with a chilling, relaxed composure.

“Just saving the boss’s family, Vincent,” Marco replied smoothly. “Can’t have outsiders kidnapping our leverage before Aleandro arrives, can we?”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed into slits. He realized in that instant that Marco wasn't saving anyone. He was orchestrating a coup.
