Chapter 7 - The Aftermath of the Storm

By sunrise, the harbor was quiet again.
Federal authorities, tipped off by an anonymous encrypted file containing all of Marco Bellini’s offshore accounts and communications with the Chicago syndicate, swept through the remaining safehouses across the tri-state area. Within forty-eight hours, the internal war was over, and Moretti Holdings emerged stronger, more unified, and entirely purged of rot.
Inside the Manhattan penthouse, the atmosphere had undergone a miraculous transformation.
The massive, sterile rooms that had once felt like a tomb were now filled with the warm, chaotic sounds of life. Cardboard moving boxes sat near the entryway, containing Sarah’s belongings from the Sunset Park walk-up—including the pink lamp shaped like the moon, which now sat proudly on the mahogany side table in the master suite.
Sarah stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the morning sun break over the Hudson River.
The door opened softly, and Aleandro stepped into the room. He had changed out of his blood-stained coat into a simple black cashmere sweater. The cold, impenetrable shadow that had defined him for a decade seemed to have lifted entirely from his features.
He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder.
“Are you thinking about Brooklyn?” Aleandro asked softly.
Sarah leaned back against his chest, smiling as she placed her hands over his. “I’m thinking about how much laundry we have to unpack.”
“Vincent can hire a dozen people to handle the unpacking.”
“No,” Sarah turned around in his arms, looking up into his clear gray eyes. “Some things a mother has to do herself.”
From the adjoining playroom, a burst of bright laughter echoed down the hallway.
“Mama! Daddy! Look at my castle!” Lily shouted, running into the master bedroom with Mr. Buttons the teddy bear tucked firmly under one arm, wearing a oversized crown made of construction paper and glitter.
Aleandro knelt down on the marble floor, opening his arms wide.
Lily ran straight into his embrace, throwing her arms around his neck and planting a loud, enthusiastic kiss right on his cheek.
“You’re the bestest daddy in the whole wide world,” Lily declared seriously.

Aleandro pulled her tight against his chest, closing his eyes as a wave of profound, unbreakable peace washed over his soul. He looked up and met Sarah’s warm, loving gaze across the room.
The fortress was no longer a prison. It was a home.
