Chapter 5 - The Midsummer Gala

The next four days passed in a blur of frantic preparation.
My father brought top stylists, tailors, and etiquette coaches to the estate. At first, Emily was overwhelmed, standing awkwardly as dressmakers measured her for custom gowns. But as the days passed, something incredible happened.
Underneath the worn sweater and the timid demeanor of a girl who had been beaten down by life, a radiant, fierce woman began to emerge.
On the night of the gala, I stood at the bottom of the grand staircase wearing my tailored black tuxedo. My father stood beside me, adjusting his cuff links, looking unusually nervous.
Then, the doors at the top of the stairs opened.
My breath caught in my throat.
Emily stepped out into the light. She wore a breath-taking emerald green silk gown that draped gracefully over her shoulders, accentuating her slender frame. Her auburn hair was styled into an elegant updo, with soft curls framing her glowing face. She wore a simple diamond necklace—a heirloom from my mother's collection that my father had personally selected for her.
She didn't look like a maid. She looked like a queen.
My father stared up at her, completely motionless. For a long, endless moment, he couldn't even breathe.
"You look... extraordinary, Emily," my father said, his voice husky with raw emotion as she walked down the steps.
Emily blushed, offering a shy, beautiful smile. "I feel like Cinderella. I'm half afraid the clock will strike midnight and I'll turn back into a girl with a mop."
"You were never just a girl with a mop, Emily," my father said softly, offering her his arm. "And this isn't a fairy tale. It's real life."
The Grand Plaza Hotel ballroom was a sea of glittering chandeliers, tuxedos, and silk dresses. Hundreds of high-society figures, journalists, and corporate titans filled the hall.
The moment the double doors opened and the butler announced, "Mr. Michael Harrington, accompanied by Master Leo Harrington and Miss Emily Carter," the entire ballroom went dead silent.
Photographers' flashes exploded in our faces like lightning.
Every eye turned toward us. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.
"Is that her?" "The cleaning lady?" "Look at her... she's stunning!" "Where did Michael find her?"
Standing near the main champagne fountain were Vanessa Montgomery and her father, Richard Montgomery, alongside Olivia Prescott. Vanessa was wearing a bright red dress, holding a glass of wine. When she saw Emily standing beside my father, looking like an ethereal goddess, her glass slipped slightly in her hand, spilling red wine onto the floor.
Her face twisted into sheer, unadulterated venom.
"Look at this circus," Vanessa spat loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. "Michael actually dressed up his servant in dead woman's jewelry to parade her around like a prize pony."
My father made a move to step forward, his jaw clenched in anger, but Emily gently touched his arm, stopping him.
"Let me," she whispered softly.
Emily stepped forward, holding her head high. Her graceful posture commanded the attention of everyone nearby. She walked directly toward Vanessa, stopping two feet away.
"Good evening, Miss Montgomery," Emily said, her voice smooth, calm, and perfectly poised. "I see you're still having trouble holding onto glassware."
A burst of suppressed laughter erupted from several nearby socialites.
Vanessa’s face turned bright red with fury. "You arrogant little leech! You think putting on an expensive dress makes you one of us? You're a disgraced dropout whose fraudster father died in shame!"
The crowd gasped. The room grew tenser by the second.
Emily didn't flinch. She didn't cry. Instead, she looked directly into Richard Montgomery's eyes—the man standing right behind Vanessa.
"My father was an honest man, Miss Montgomery," Emily said, her voice ringing clear across the ballroom. "Unlike your father, who paid inspectors sixty thousand dollars in 2021 to dump toxic lead into the Dutchess County water supply and frame my family's farm."
Richard Montgomery’s face drained of all color instantly. "What... what nonsense are you talking about?!"
"It's not nonsense, Mr. Montgomery," my father’s deep voice echoed as he stepped up beside Emily, pulling out a thick manila folder from his jacket. "Federal prosecutors received the unredacted soil samples and bank transfer records thirty minutes ago. The EPA is currently executing a search warrant at your corporate headquarters."
Panic erupted near the stage. Two federal agents in suits stepped out from the main entrance, walking directly toward Richard Montgomery.
"Richard Montgomery," the lead agent announced, pulling out handcuffs. "You are under arrest for environmental fraud, corporate sabotage, and obstruction of justice."

As the police led the pale, trembling billionaire away, Vanessa screamed in horror, clutching her father's arm as high society watched in total shock.
Emily stood tall, her hand wrapped tightly in my father's, as the crowd realized that the woman they had mocked was the daughter of the man the Montgomerys had destroyed—and she had finally brought justice home.
