Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

The hospital waiting room at New York Presbyterian was suffocatingly quiet.
My father had arrived on a private jet within four hours of receiving the emergency call. He hadn't even changed out of his business suit. His tie was loose, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands trembled violently as he held me tightly against his chest in the waiting room chair.
I was completely unhurt, save for minor smoke inhalation, thanks to the wet blanket Emily had wrapped around me.
But Emily was in emergency surgery.
She had suffered three broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, second-degree burns on her back, and severe blood loss from the shattered glass of the greenhouse.
A doctor stepped out of the surgical suite, pulling off his mask.
My father stood up instantly, his entire body rigid. "Is she..."
"She’s alive, Mr. Harrington," the doctor said, offering a tired but reassuring smile. "She’s a remarkably strong woman. The surgery was successful. We managed to stabilize her internal bleeding, and her burns will heal with proper care. She just woke up in recovery."
My father let out a long, ragged sob of pure relief, collapsing back into his chair for a second before wrapping his arms around me. "Thank God... thank God."
Ten minutes later, my father and I stepped softly into the private recovery room.
Emily lay in the hospital bed, hooked up to IV lines and monitors. Her face was pale, and she had bandages wrapped around her shoulder and arm, but when she saw us walk through the door, her tired face lit up with a faint, beautiful smile.
"Hey, kiddo," she whispered weakly, her voice raspy from smoke.
I ran across the room, carefully climbing onto the edge of her bed to wrap my arms gently around her neck, being mindful of her injuries. "I thought you died, Emily!"
"I told you... I’ll never let anything happen to you," she murmured, kissing my forehead softly.
My father walked over to the side of the bed. He didn't say a word. He simply fell to his knees beside her bed, buried his face in her hand, and wept openly.
"Michael..." Emily whispered, running her fingers through his dark hair.
"You risked your life for my son," my father sobbed, his voice broken. "You almost died for him..."
"He’s my family, Michael," Emily said softly, tears welling up in her own eyes. "I would do it a thousand times over."
My father raised his head, looking into her eyes with a fierce, absolute devotion. "I promise you, Emily... whoever did this will burn in hell."
The investigation was brutal and swift.
With Michael Harrington pushing the NYPD and federal investigators, it took less than twenty-four hours to uncover the truth. The night guard who disabled the sprinklers cracked under interrogation, revealing wire transfers originating from an off-shore shell company linked directly to Olivia Prescott.
By noon the next day, police raided the Prescott estate in Long Island.

Olivia Prescott was arrested on live national television, charged with attempted murder, arson, corporate conspiracy, and bribery. As she was led away in handcuffs, crying hysterically as reporters snapped photos, her family’s legacy collapsed into absolute ruin.
The high-society elite who had once looked down on Emily Carter were now forced to watch as the corrupt women who tried to destroy her ended up in prison cells, while the former cleaning lady emerged as the undisputed heroine of New York.
