Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Home

Two months passed.

The Harrington estate had been completely restored. My father spared no expense, rebuilding the damaged east wing into a magnificent space filled with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, custom woodwork, and sprawling indoor gardens designed entirely by Emily.

The house was no longer a cold, sterile mansion filled with expensive artifacts. It was a home.

Laughter filled the hallways every day. Emily had fully recovered from her injuries, her strength and radiant spirit back in full force. She had officially enrolled in a prestigious master's program in environmental architecture, funded entirely by a scholarship my father had created in her late father's name.

It was an early autumn evening. The leaves on the trees surrounding the estate had turned vibrant shades of orange, red, and gold.

My father had closed the office early. He was standing on the newly rebuilt backyard patio, wearing a crisp dark blue suit, holding a small velvet box in his hand.

I stood beside him, grinning from ear to ear. "Are you nervous, Dad?"

My father looked down at me, adjusting his jacket. "I’ve negotiated billion-dollar corporate mergers, Leo, and my heart has never pounded this fast in my entire life."

"She’s going to say yes," I laughed, poking his arm.

"She better," he smiled nervously. "Because I don't know how to live without her anymore."

The glass terrace doors opened, and Emily stepped out onto the patio. She was wearing a simple, gorgeous cream-colored autumn dress, her auburn hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders.

When she saw my father standing there with red roses scattered across the stone floor and warm lanterns lighting up the garden, she stopped in her tracks, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Michael... what is all this?" she asked softly.

My father walked over to her, taking her hands gently in his.

"Emily," my father began, his deep voice trembling with emotion. "Two months ago, I was a man living in the dark. I thought wealth and power could protect my son, but all I was doing was building higher walls around our grief."

He looked over at me, then back into Emily's tear-filled eyes.

"Then a little boy looked past five wealthy women, looked past designer dresses and social status, and saw the most extraordinary soul he had ever encountered," my father continued softly. "You didn't just save my son's life, Emily. You healed his heart. You healed my heart."

My father dropped down onto one knee on the cool stone floor. He opened the velvet box, revealing a magnificent custom ring set with an uncut emerald—representing the farm she loved—surrounded by brilliant diamonds.

"Emily Carter," my father said, tears glittering in his eyes. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife, and officially becoming Leo’s mother?"

Emily sobbed, dropping to her knees right in front of him, pulling his face into her hands.

May you like

"Yes!" she cried out softly, kissing him deeply as tears spilled over her cheeks. "Yes, Michael! A thousand times yes!"

I ran over and threw my arms around both of them, crying happy tears as we tumbled onto the rose petals on the floor, laughing together as a real family.
