Chapter 7 - The Confrontation and the Cure

With Marcus locked away and his faction dismantled within twenty-four hours, the Moretti syndicate underwent a violent, bloodless purge. By Saturday night, every loyalist who had taken bribes from Marcus was either in chains or fleeing across the state line.

The estate was finally quiet. The armed guards at the gates were my men—men whose loyalty had been tested in fire.

Upstairs in the master suite, however, the real war was still being fought.

Matteo’s monitor began to beep with a frantic, erratic rhythm. The flat, exhausted tone of the machine echoed through the room like a death knell.

“Luca! Come quickly!” Elena’s voice rang out from the bedroom, filled with raw panic.

I dropped the stack of syndicate ledgers on my desk and sprinted down the hallway, bursting through the bedroom door. Matteo was thrashing against the sheets, his tiny hands clutching his chest, his face completely drained of color.

Dr. Pierce, who had been hastily summoned back to the estate, was frantically pressing a defibrillator pad against the boy’s chest.

“His heart is going into cardiac arrest!” Dr. Pierce shouted, sweat beading on his forehead. “The toxin has completely overwhelmed his system! We’re losing him, Mr. Moretti! We’re losing him!”

“Do something!” I roared, grabbing the doctor by his lapels and lifting him off his feet before Elena’s hand caught my arm.

“Luca, stop! Violence won't save him!” Elena cried, her own eyes streaming with tears. She turned to the doctor. “Did you bring the chelation serum from the Swiss clinic like I told you to order through my sister’s medical contact?”

“It... it arrived an hour ago,” Dr. Pierce stammered, pointing to a silver metal briefcase on the nightstand. “But his veins are too collapsed! We can’t get an IV line in time!”

I looked at my son. Matteo’s eyelids fluttered, his lips turning a terrifying shade of blue. He clutched the worn stuffed lion Sofia had given him, his little fingers loosening.

“Daddy...” he whispered, so softly I almost couldn't hear it over the screaming alarm of the monitor.

My chest tore open. All the power, all the money, all the fear I commanded in Chicago meant nothing. I was utterly, helplessly powerless to stop death from taking my boy.

“Use my veins,” I said instantly.

Dr. Pierce stared at me, dumbfounded. “What?”

“Take my blood,” I ordered, ripping off my jacket and rolling up my left sleeve. “Filter the serum through me, or pump it straight into my aorta and hook a bypass line to him. Do whatever it takes! Use me!”

Elena didn't hesitate. She grabbed the silver briefcase, snapped it open, and pulled out a specialized transfusion kit—the exact experimental equipment Sofia had researched before her death, smuggled in by her medical network.

“Doctor, do as he says!” Elena commanded, her voice cutting through the panic with absolute authority. “Set up the parallel line! Match his blood type—it’s O-negative, universal donor. Hurry!”

Dr. Pierce, hands shaking, grabbed the needles and tubing. Within seconds, a thick plastic line connected a massive needle in my forearm directly into the catheter in Matteo’s tiny wrist.

“Begin infusion,” Elena whispered.

A cold rush of fluid flooded my veins as the powerful antidote mixed with my blood, pumping directly into my son’s body. I didn't flinch. I clenched my jaw, staring down at Matteo’s pale face, pouring every ounce of my will, my strength, and my soul into keeping him tethered to this world.

Stay with me, son, I chanted silently in my mind. Your mother is waiting for us, but it’s not our time yet. Stay.

For three endless, agonizing minutes, the heart monitor held its flat, terrifying tone.

Dr. Pierce bowed his head, closing his eyes. “Mr. Moretti... I’m so sorry—”

“Shut up!” I shouted, gripping Matteo’s small hand in my massive palm.

Then, a single, sharp BEEP.

Then another.

Beep... beep... beep...

The green line on the monitor spiked, tracing a steady, rising wave. The erratic rhythm smoothed out into a strong, powerful, rhythmic pulse.

Matteo drew in a deep, shuddering breath, his chest rising as color slowly flooded back into his cheeks. He opened his amber eyes, blinked against the light, and looked up at me.

“Daddy?” he whispered, his voice small, but clear.

May you like

I fell to my knees beside the bed, burying my face in the blankets next to his small hand, my shoulders shaking as the dam broke and every drop of grief, terror, and relief I had held back for months finally poured out.

Elena stood beside us, resting her hand gently on my shoulder, letting out a sob of pure, overwhelming joy.
