Chapter 8 - Justice and Healing

Three weeks later, the spring sun was shining brightly over the gardens of the Moretti estate, warming the Japanese maple Sofia had planted years ago. New green buds were unfurling along its branches, reaching toward the sky.
Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was entirely transformed.
The heavy, suffocating curtains had been pulled back, letting in floods of golden sunlight. At the center of the mahogany table sat Matteo, now sitting upright on a booster seat, laughing as he used a spoon to dig into a massive slice of fresh red velvet cake.
His cheeks were rosy. His laughter filled the high-ceilinged room with a sound of pure, unadulterated life.
I sat at the head of the table, watching him with a quiet peace I had never known in my entire life. Across from me sat Elena, wearing a soft blue dress that made her amber eyes sparkle in the sunlight.
“You’re spoiling him,” Elena smiled, shaking her head as Matteo reached for a second helping of frosting.
“He earned it,” I replied, taking a sip of my coffee. “Besides, after surviving fourteen days against a death sentence, a little extra sugar is the least of his worries.”
The federal prosecutors had finally finished their work with Marcus Vance and his co-conspirators. Armed with the financial records, the audio confessions, and the unedited security logs Elena had recovered, Marcus was facing multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. His empire was dismantled, his faction dissolved, and the Moretti syndicate was restructured from the ground up—focused not on fear and bloodshed, but on legitimate investments, protection, and peace.
The door to the dining room opened quietly, and Victor stepped inside, holding a thick manila folder.
“Boss,” Victor said respectfully, nodding to Elena and Matteo before meeting my eyes. “The federal judge just signed off on the final asset forfeiture. Marcus’s properties on the South Side have been liquidated, and the funds have been transferred into a trust foundation.”
“What kind of foundation?” Elena asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Sofia’s Legacy,” I answered quietly, looking across the table at her. “A medical research and pediatric care fund for children who can’t afford treatment. Managed jointly by the Moretti family... and the Rossi family.”
Elena stared at me, her breath catching in her throat. A slow, radiant smile broke across her face—a smile that looked so much like her sister’s it made my heart ache with a sweet, profound longing.

“Thank you, Luca,” she whispered.
“Don't thank me,” I said, standing up from my chair and walking around the table. I knelt beside Matteo’s seat, wiping a smudge of red velvet frosting from his chin, before looking up at Elena. “Thank Sofia. She’s the one who saved us.”
