Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Boardroom

The private elevator chime pinged with a gentle, melodic tone that contrasted sharply with the deadly tension inside the executive suite.
Before Daniel's security team could draw their weapons, the heavy oak doors slid open. Stepping out onto the private floor was Marcus Vance himself, flanked by two corporate lawyers and a trio of private armed guards. Vance wore a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than Emily’s entire apartment building, his silver hair neatly combed, a patronizing, grandfatherly smile plastered across his face.
"Daniel, my boy," Vance boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I heard about the commotion downstairs. Absolute madness! A crazed gunman, or so the initial reports say. Are you alright? The board was terrified."
Daniel didn't move. He stood beside the low mahogany table where Emily was quietly finishing her hot chocolate, his posture rigid as a steel beam.
"Save the performance, Marcus," Daniel said, his voice devoid of any warmth. "The guards you hired didn't use a gun. They used a wrench on my limousine's brake lines."
Vance’s smile didn't waver, but a microscopic twitch near his left eye betrayed him. He glanced briefly at the little girl wrapped in cashmere, then back at Daniel with a look of theatrical disbelief.
"My word, Daniel. The stress of running this empire is finally getting to you. You're imagining conspiracies! Hiring assassins? Me?" Vance chuckled, turning to his lawyers. "Did you hear this? The poor boy has lost his grip."
"The burner phones have your offshore routing numbers, Marcus," Daniel stated coldly, stepping closer to the older man. "And the encryption key used to authorize the wire transfer matches your private terminal. You're done."
Vance’s expression slowly shifted. The grandfatherly mask melted away, replaced by a cold, predatory sneer. He adjusted his silk tie, stepping forward until he was only inches away from Daniel.
"Even if you have the logs, Daniel, possession is nine-tenths of the law," Vance whispered, his voice dripping with venom. "By morning, I will call an emergency emergency board meeting under Article 11, Section 4: mental incompetence due to acute paranoia and trauma. You'll be stripped of your voting shares, institutionalized, and Harrison Global will be mine."
Vance’s gaze darted to Emily. "And as for the little rat who ruined your grand exit... accidents happen in this city every day. A wet street, a speeding truck, a tragic little orphan lost in the rain."
In a blur of motion that defied his size, Daniel grabbed Vance by the lapels of his expensive suit and slammed him against the glass wall. The smart glass rippled and hummed under the impact, spider-webbing outward.
"If you or anyone in your syndicate so much as looks at her," Daniel hissed, his face inches from Vance's, "I won't wait for the board, and I won't wait for the courts. I will dismantle you piece by piece until there is nothing left of your name."
Vance choked out a laugh, grabbing Daniel’s wrists. "You can't protect her forever, Daniel. You're a target now. And she's holding your hand."
Daniel shoved Vance back, letting him straighten his jacket with a trembling hand.
"Get out of my office," Daniel ordered, pointing toward the elevator. "Before I forget I'm a civilized man."
Vance smirked, stepping back into the elevator with his lawyers. As the doors closed, his eyes locked onto Emily with a promise of absolute violence.

Daniel turned around, breathing heavily. He looked down at Emily, whose face was pale but determined.
"We're leaving," Daniel said. "Now."
