Chapter 5 - The Ghost Train Safehouse

The bulletproof Maybach cut through the midnight rain like a black knife, its windows tinted to absolute darkness. Inside, the leather seats were plush, but neither Daniel nor Emily spoke.
They weren't heading to Daniel’s primary penthouse in downtown Manhattan—Vance and his mercenaries would have that location mapped out. Instead, the car descended into the subterranean network beneath the city, pulling into a disused subway terminal converted into a high-security subterranean safehouse.
The heavy steel blast doors hissed shut behind them, sealing them off from the noise and danger of the metropolis.
Emily stepped out of the car, her eyes wide as she took in the space. It was vast, lit by blue LED strips running along exposed brick walls. Computer banks hummed quietly in the corner, and a massive map of global financial networks glowed on a central holographic display.
"Is this where you live when bad people are mad at you?" Emily asked, hugging her damp jacket around herself.
Daniel offered a tired, genuine smile, kneeling down to eye level with her. "Something like that. It's a place to think, plan, and survive. Are you holding up okay, Emily? I know this isn't how you expected your Thursday evening to go."
"My grandmother says life is like a pot of soup," Emily said thoughtfully, echoing one of Nai Nai's favorite sayings. "You never know what ingredients are going to fall in until the lid comes off."
Daniel chuckled softly. "Your grandmother is a philosopher. Tell me about her. What's her name?"
"Mei-Ling," Emily said, a soft warmth entering her voice. "She makes the best pork dumplings in Chinatown. And she worries about me a lot. When I didn't come home by six o'clock from school, she's going to be looking everywhere."
Daniel’s expression immediately hardened. He stood up and walked over to his head of security, Marcus, who was typing furiously at a terminal.
"Marcus, status on Emily's apartment?"
"We sent a tactical retrieval team to Chinatown ten minutes ago," Marcus replied without looking up from his screens. "We need to secure her grandmother before Vance's cleaner squads realize who the girl is and use her as leverage."
Daniel felt a cold knot form in his stomach. If Vance’s men reached Mei-Ling before his team did...
"Hurry," Daniel ordered. "Send backup. Double the extraction unit."
Suddenly, the overhead lights in the safehouse flickered violently. The blue LED strips died, replaced by an eerie, pulsing red emergency strobe.
"Sir!" a technician yelled from across the room. "We've been breached! External firewall bypassed!"
"How?" Marcus slammed his fist on the desk. "This location is untraceable!"
May you like
"It's not an electronic breach," the technician shouted over the blaring klaxons. "It's physical. They tracked the Maybach's encrypted sub-frequency!"
Before Daniel could draw his weapon, the reinforced blast doors at the far end of the terminal groaned, metal screeching against metal as hydraulic charges blew the locks. Smoke poured into the room, and through the haze, the dark, tactical silhouettes of armed mercenaries began to advance.
