Chapter 10 - Dumplings and Dawn

The sun rose over Manhattan, burning away the lingering gray mist of the storm and bathing the towering glass spires of Harrison Global in a warm, golden morning light.

Inside a small, warm, and bustling restaurant in Chinatown, the scent of steaming bamboo baskets filled the air. Laughter, the clatter of porcelain spoons, and the comforting hum of Mandarin conversation filled the room.

At a corner table sat Daniel Harrison, looking entirely out of place in his tailored, high-end trousers and crisp white shirt—minus the jacket, with his sleeves rolled up. Across from him sat Emily, wearing a clean, dry yellow sweater, happily devouring a plate of fresh pork dumplings.

Beside her stood Nai Nai—Mei-Ling—an elderly woman with sharp, kind eyes and silver hair pulled back into a neat bun. She set down a fresh bowl of steaming soup in front of Daniel, studying him with a critical, grandmotherly gaze.

"You look like you went through a war, young man," Mei-Ling said in English, though with a thick, melodic accent. "Too skinny. You need more broth."

Daniel smiled, taking a respectful sip of the soup. It was rich, flavorful, and tasted like home—something he hadn't felt in decades. "Thank you, Mei-Ling. I think I've had a very long week."

"Nai Nai says you're a hero," Emily piped up around a bite of dumpling, her eyes shining with mischief and admiration.

"No, Emily," Daniel corrected gently, reaching across the table to squeeze her small hand. "The hero of this story was sitting under an awning in the rain, listening to things she wasn't supposed to understand."

Mei-Ling sat down at the table, folding her hands and looking between Daniel and her granddaughter. "In life, Mr. Harrison, it is not the big and powerful who change the world. It is the small voices that refuse to stay quiet when everyone else is looking away."

Daniel nodded slowly, looking out the restaurant window toward the distant silhouette of Harrison Global. The corporate vultures had been swept away; Marcus Vance and his co-conspirators were already behind bars awaiting federal trial. The green energy initiative was fully funded, and Harrison Global had established a permanent, multi-million-dollar foundation dedicated to underprivileged children and education in New York City—overseen jointly by the board... and a very special honorary advisor.

Daniel turned back to Emily, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his face.

"So, Emily," Daniel said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Your grandmother makes the best dumplings in Chinatown. But I was wondering... would you and Nai Nai be interested in moving into a much safer, much bigger apartment uptown? Preferably one with an elevator that works and a view of the park?"

Emily stopped chewing for a second, looking at her grandmother, then back at the billionaire who had promised to protect her forever.

She grinned, a bright, triumphant smile that chased away every shadow of the stormy night.

May you like

"Only," Emily said, raising her spoon like a tiny gavel, "if we can still come back here every Sunday for dumplings."

Daniel laughed—a full, rich, joyful sound that echoed through the small restaurant as the morning sun finally broke completely through the clouds, marking the dawn of an unbreakable bond.
