Chapter 4 - The Chemistry of Betrayal

The forensic team arrived forty minutes later, entering through the private service gate under the direct supervision of Detective Marcus Vance, a veteran investigator from the Greenwich Police Department who had known Grant since their college days.

Vance bagged the shattered wineglass shards, swabbed the rug where the red stain had dried into a crusty maroon map, and took the empty EpiPen barrel into custody for fingerprint analysis.

In the master library upstairs, Grant sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring out the reinforced glass window at the dark waters of Long Island Sound.

Adrian paced back and forth across the Persian rug, his frustration barely contained beneath a veneer of corporate professionalism.

“This is absurd, Grant! You’re turning the estate into a crime scene over a domestic dispute with a housekeeper!” Adrian stopped pacing, turning to face the desk. “We have the Milwaukee board meeting in thirty-six hours. If word gets out that the CEO of Holloway Infrastructure was poisoned inside his own home, our stock will take a thirty-point hit before the opening bell!”

“Let it drop,” Grant said without turning around.

“Are you insane?” Adrian threw his hands up. “Millions of dollars—”

“Millions of dollars don't mean a damn thing if I’m dead, Adrian,” Grant interrupted, his voice dropping into a deadly register. He finally turned around, resting his forearms on the desk, locking his dark eyes onto his cousin. “And what’s more interesting... toxicology preliminary results just came back from the mobile lab unit.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened. “And?”

“It wasn't a standard allergen,” Grant said slowly, watching Adrian’s face for every micro-expression. “It was a synthetic derivative of aconitine. A fast-acting neurotoxin. The kind of compound that requires specific medical clearance to acquire, or... extensive connections within industrial pharmaceutical supply chains.”

Adrian swallowed hard, though he maintained his posture. “And you think I had access to aconitine? That’s insulting, Grant. I’m your chief operating officer, not a Bond villain.”

“You’re also the sole beneficiary of my corporate shares if I die without a direct heir,” Grant pointed out smoothly.

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crack stone.

Before Adrian could formulate a defense, a soft knock sounded at the library door. Detective Vance stepped inside, holding a clear evidence bag containing a small, metallic flash drive.

“We pulled the security footage from the butler’s pantry hallway for the last twelve hours,” Vance said, laying the drive on the edge of the desk. “And we found something very interesting regarding Walter Pike.”

“Walter?” Adrian blinked, seizing on the distraction. “See? It was the help! It was the old man losing his mind!”

“Not quite, Mr. Holloway,” Vance corrected dryly. “Walter didn't poison the wine. But he was paid two hundred thousand dollars in an offshore crypto transfer originating from a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”

Grant stood up slowly. “Registered under what name?”

“Holloway Holdings International,” Vance replied. “The parent company... controlled exclusively by Adrian.”

Adrian’s face drained of every drop of color. He took two steps backward, his back hitting the heavy oak bookshelf. “That’s... that’s a forgery. Anyone can set up a shell corporation. You can't prove—”

“The transfer was authenticated by our financial crimes unit ten minutes ago,” Vance cut him off, signaling to the two armed officers waiting in the hallway. “Adrian Holloway, you’re under arrest for attempted murder and conspiracy.”

As the officers moved in, snapping the heavy steel cuffs around Adrian’s wrists, Adrian didn't scream or fight. He simply stared at Grant with eyes full of venomous hatred.

“You should have died on that floor, Grant,” Adrian hissed as they dragged him toward the door. “Just like Rebecca and Avery. You should have died in the snow.”

The name hung in the freezing air of the library like a curse.

Grant didn't blink. But inside his chest, something long-buried and frozen solid finally shattered.
