Chapter 8 - The Resolution of Shadows
The evening shadows lengthened across the lawn of the Greenwich estate, turning the manicured hedges into dark, sculptural waves beneath a harvest moon.
Inside the grand dining room—a room that had not hosted a family dinner in five years—a long mahogany table was set with fine china, silver candlesticks, and a warm, roasted feast prepared by the estate's newly vetted culinary staff.
Grant sat at the head of the table.
To his right sat Claire, smiling as she poured sparkling water into crystal glasses.
To his left sat Emma, happily devouring a plate of allergy-safe garlic bread while holding her stuffed rabbit propped up on a spare napkin beside her water glass.
“You know,” Emma said, looking up from her plate with crumbs on her chin, “this house is much less scary when the lights are on.”
Grant chuckled, raising his glass of sparkling water. “I completely agree, young lady. I think we’ve spent entirely too many years keeping the lights turned down low in this place.”
Claire looked across the table at Grant, her heart swelling with a warmth she hadn't allowed herself to feel in years. The cold, distant millionaire who demanded absolute perfection had vanished, replaced by a man who had found his humanity through the most terrifying trial imaginable.
“To new beginnings,” Claire said softly, raising her glass.
“To light after the storm,” Grant added, his eyes locking onto hers with a depth of emotion that needed no further words.
