Chapter 3 - Sanctuary Within the Fortress

The private penthouse atop Vale Meridian Holdings was a sprawling, glass-walled sanctuary suspended four hundred feet above the heart of Chicago. From its floor-to-ceiling windows, the city sprawled in a grid of steel and concrete, glittering beneath the afternoon sun.
Yet, as Mara stood near the grand piano in the corner of the minimalist living room, the city felt impossibly distant, like a painting behind museum glass.
“You cannot stay in your apartment tonight,” Luca said, placing a sealed glass of water on the marble kitchen island.
Mara turned around, her arms crossed defensively over her chest. She had changed into a soft, oversized cashmere sweater and dark slacks that Daniel had retrieved from her apartment under armed escort an hour earlier.
“My apartment has a reinforced door, a security system, and a deadbolt,” Mara argued, though her voice lacked its usual unyielding authority. “Arthur doesn't even know my new gate code; he ambushed me in the parking garage because he knew my schedule.”
“He waited outside your building for forty-five minutes before you arrived,” Luca replied calmly, walking over to pour himself a finger of neat bourbon. “He didn't guess your schedule, Mara. Someone gave it to him.”
The weight of those words settled over the penthouse like an anchor.
Someone inside Vale Meridian. Someone with access to the executive calendars, travel logs, and security clearances.
“If I stay here,” Mara said carefully, her dark eyes searching his face, “what does that make me? In the eyes of the staff, the board, the city? The secretary hiding behind her boss’s fortress?”
Luca took a slow sip of his bourbon, his gaze never wavering.
“It makes you a survivor who recognizes when the perimeter has been breached,” he said, his voice dropping into that low, resonant tone that always made her pulse skip a beat. “You think pride is more important than safety?”
“Pride is all some people have left when everything else is stripped away,” she fired back, stepping closer, refusing to shrink under his intense scrutiny.
Luca set his glass down on the counter. He was tall enough that she had to tilt her head up to meet his eyes, but for the first time in the three years they had worked together, the distance between them felt electric rather than professional.
“You are not some people, Mara,” Luca said quietly, stepping into her personal space without touching her, giving her all the room in the world to retreat if she chose to. “You are the administrative spine of this entire corporation. When someone breaks your jaw, they are testing my walls. And I do not tolerate breaches.”
Mara swallowed hard, her split lip stinging slightly. “You make it sound like a gang war.”
“Business at this level is a war, Mara. The only difference is the weapons wear three-thousand-dollar suits.” He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His touch was feather-light, deliberate, and entirely devoid of professional boundaries. “Get some rest in the west guest suite. Daniel is stationed outside the door, and the perimeter is locked down.”
“And Arthur?” she asked, her breath catching in her throat as his hand lingered for a fraction of a second against her cheek.

A cold, terrifying smile touched the corners of Luca’s mouth.
“Arthur is currently learning the true cost of trespassing.”
