Chapter 7 - The High-Society Gala Trap

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, orchestral waltzes, and Chicago’s elite wrapped in designer silk and tailored tuxedos. Vale Meridian Holdings was hosting its annual autumn charity gala, a glittering event designed to project stability and philanthropic grace to the city’s power brokers.

Yet beneath the polished surface, the room was a pressure cooker.

Mara stood near the edge of the mezzanine overlooking the ballroom, wearing an emerald-green velvet evening gown that hugged her curves with breathtaking elegance. The bruise on her cheek had been expertly covered by professional cosmetics, and her posture was once again unyielding and proud.

Beside her stood Luca, impeccably dressed in a custom midnight-blue tuxedo.

“Holloway just arrived,” Luca murmured, his voice low and steady as he tracked the CFO’s movement through the crowd below. “He’s heading toward the eastern terrace with two members of the Zurich delegation.”

“He thinks he’s secured the Q3 vote,” Mara said quietly, watching Holloway shake hands with a foreign investor. “He doesn't know Arthur signed the confession three hours ago.”

“Arthur talked faster than expected once Daniel explained the logistics of a permanent vacation,” Luca replied with a faint, dangerous smirk.

Suddenly, a sharp, urgent buzz vibrated against Mara’s evening clutch. She pulled out her secure corporate phone.

A message from the internal security network: Sub-basement server access attempted from terminal 4B. Override code entered.

Mara’s breath hitched. “Luca... someone is trying to wipe the audit logs from the main server while we’re here at the gala.”

Luca’s expression darkened instantly. It wasn't a random hacker. It was an inside job—Holloway’s final, desperate attempt to erase the evidence before the morning board vote.

“Stay here,” Luca commanded, his hand resting briefly on her shoulder.

“No,” Mara said firmly, looking straight into his eyes. “This is my audit. I’m coming with you.”

Luca looked at her for three seconds, weighing the danger against her fierce determination. Then he nodded.

“Stay behind me.”
