Chapter 4 - POISON IN THE VELVET

Dawn broke over the Hudson River in shades of bruised purple and grey.

I stood outside Isabella’s bedroom door on the third floor. The hallway was dead quiet, save for the soft tick of the grandfather clock near the stairs.

I slowly pushed the heavy oak door open.

Inside, the room was warm. Sunlight filtered through the sheer silk curtains, illuminating the little white four-poster bed.

Sitting on the edge of the mattress was Sophia. She was gently rubbing a warm mixture of crushed mint leaves, rosemary, and olive oil into Isabella’s bare feet. Little Emma sat on the floor nearby, humming a quiet Italian lullaby while playing with a wooden doll.

Isabella wasn't crying. For the first time in two years, her cheeks had a faint pink glow.

"Daddy," Isabella whispered, turning her head as I stepped into the room. She looked down at her toes. "Look."

She concentrated hard, her small brow furrowing.

Slowly... agonizingly... her left foot flexed upward. Her big toe wiggled against Sophia’s oil-stained fingers.

I fell to my knees beside her bed, grabbing her small hand and pressing it against my face. Tears blurred my vision, hot and uncontrollable.

"It hurts a little bit," Isabella murmured, a small smile breaking across her face. "It feels like... like needles waking up inside my skin."

"That is the nerve pathways firing again, sweetheart," Sophia said softly, looking at me with a solemn, knowing gaze. "The herbal bath my mother taught me doesn't just soothe the skin, Don Matteo. The rosemary and hot steam draw the heavy chemical toxins out through the sweat glands, while the mint stimulates peripheral blood flow. If we keep doing this three times a day, the paralysis will completely reverse within a month."

I looked up at Sophia. The woman I had almost thrown out into the freezing cold yesterday was currently saving my daughter's life.

"Sophia," I said, my voice trembling. "Whatever you need—money, security, a estate in Italy—it is yours. Name your price."

Sophia shook her head gently. "I don't want your money, Don Matteo. My mother died protecting your wife's secret because she believed in loyalty. I only ask for one thing."

"Anything."

"Find the man who put that poison in this little girl's tea," Sophia said, her eyes turning fierce and hard. "And make sure he never hurts another child."

I stood up, brushing my coat down. My tears dried instantly, replaced by a cold, merciless clarity that had made me the most feared kingpin on the East Coast.

"Oh, he will pay, Sophia," I said, stepping toward the door. "I am going to burn his world until there isn't even ash left to bury."

I walked down to the main foyer where my chief of security, Marco, was waiting.

"Gather the capos," I ordered cold-bloodedly. "Tell Julian, Paulie, and Sal that we are having an emergency council meeting at the docks at 10:00 AM. Tell them... we found a lead on the Moretti survivors."

Marco bowed his head. "Understood, Don Matteo. Should I prepare the firing line?"

"Not yet," I replied, loading a heavy magazine into my silver-plated Kimber .45 pistol. "First, I want to watch them sweat."
