Chapter 9 - THE FINAL RECKONING

The top floor of the Apex Pharmaceutical Tower in Manhattan looked like a palace of glass and chrome.
It was 11:00 PM. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the glittering lights of the New York skyline stretched out into the dark.
Inside the executive boardroom, Dr. Victor Vance—the billionaire CEO of Apex Pharmaceuticals—sat behind his massive glass desk, staring at three computer screens displaying frantic stock sell-offs and leaked federal indictment notices.
Beside him stood two heavy corporate security guards, their hands resting nervously on their holsters.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom didn't open—they were blown off their hinges by a directional breaching charge.
BOOM!
Glass shattered. Smoke poured into the room.
Before the two guards could even raise their weapons, Marco and Paulie swept through the smoke, dropping both men with quick, suppressed shots to the legs.
I walked through the doorway, wearing a black wool overcoat, my leather gloves spotless. Behind me walked two senior agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by a lead prosecutor from the Southern District of New York.
Dr. Vance scrambled backward in his leather executive chair, his face pale as paper. "Rossi! You... you can't be here! This is a private corporate facility! I'll call the federal authorities!"
"You don't need to call them, Victor," I said smoothly, gesturing toward the two FBI agents beside me. "I brought them with me."
"What is the meaning of this?" Vance stammered, pulling at his expensive silk tie.
The lead FBI agent stepped forward, tossing a thick stack of federal arrest warrants onto the glass desk.
"Dr. Victor Vance," the agent declared. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder across state lines, illegal human testing of unapproved neurotoxins, and corporate bribery."
"This is absurd!" Vance shrieked. "You have no evidence! I am a respected corporate executive!"
"We have Julian Mercer’s full video confession, Victor," I said, leaning over the desk until my face was inches from his. "We have the Swiss bank wire receipts showing your signature authorizing $2.4 million in payments to murder my wife and poison my six-year-old child."
Vance swallowed hard, looking at the FBI agents, then back at me. He saw the cold, ruthless promise of death in my eyes—a promise that federal prison would look like a sanctuary compared to what I would do to him if he escaped trial.
"You... you monster," Vance whispered.
"No, Victor," I said, reaching down and pulling the expensive gold pen from his coat pocket, slipping it into my own. "I'm just a father who protects his family. You're the monster who put a price tag on a child's legs."
As the FBI agents slapped steel handcuffs onto Vance's wrists and dragged him out of the boardroom, I stood by the high window, looking out over the city lights.

The Morettis were gone. Julian was gone. Apex Pharmaceuticals was collapsing into bankruptcy and federal seizures.
The shadows that had haunted my family for three long years had finally been burned away by the light.
