Chapter 4 - Into the Lion’s Den

An hour later, a fleet of black SUVs pulled up to a gated estate high in the Gold Coast.
The Moretti compound was a fortress of black marble, steel, and bulletproof glass. Yet, as Sophie stepped through the grand foyer carrying little Julian, the luxury felt cold, empty, and sterile.
Dominic led her up a grand staircase into a sprawling, modern nursery that looked like it had been put together in a hurry. Expensive cribs, designer clothes, and unboxed toys littered the hardwood floor.
“Set him down,” Dominic instructed softly.
Sophie gently laid the baby into the plush crib. The second her skin lost contact with his, Julian began to squirm, his little face twisting into a scowl. Sophie quickly laid her hand flat against his chest and began to hum a low, gentle melody. Within seconds, his breathing smoothed out again.
Dominic stood in the doorway, watching her from the shadows. His hand rested near the lapel of his jacket, but his eyes were soft.
“What song is that?” he asked softly.
“It’s just an old lullaby my mother taught me,” Sophie whispered back, not taking her eyes off the baby. “He just wants to know someone is there. Babies don’t care about bloodlines or money, Mr. Moretti. They just want warmth.”
“Call me Dominic,” he said, his voice deep and dark in the dim nursery light.

He walked over to the crib, standing so close behind her that Sophie could feel the heat radiating from his chest.
“You’re a dangerous woman, Sophie Lane,” Dominic murmured, his breath brushing her ear. “You came into my world without fear, and in less than one night, you’ve made yourself indispensable.”
