Chapter 8 - The Traitor Within

An hour later, the gunfire outside stopped.

Dominic’s tablet flashed green—the compound had been secured by his secondary security force. He unlocked the safe room door, gun held low, and led Sophie and the baby back into the main wing.

The house was a warzone. Bullet holes peppered the walls, glass shattered everywhere.

Standing in the center of the grand foyer was Marco—the bodyguard with the scarred eyebrow who had stopped Sophie at the restaurant on night one. He was holding an assault rifle, surrounded by four of Dominic’s loyal men.

“Boss,” Marco said, nodding. “The Valenti hitmen are dead. The estate is clear.”

Dominic walked down the stairs, his grip on his gun tight. “How did they bypass the perimeter security, Marco? Only five people have those codes.”

Marco’s eyes flickered nervously toward Sophie and the baby in her arms.

“They must have hacked the system, boss,” Marco stammered.

“Liar,” Sophie blurted out.

Every man in the room froze. Dominic turned to look at her.

“What did you say, Sophie?” Dominic asked softly.

“Twenty minutes before the attack, I saw Marco in the garden,” Sophie said, her voice strong despite her heart racing. “He was talking on a satellite phone. He said, ‘The package is in the nursery. Strike now.’ I didn’t realize what he meant until the bomb went off.”

Marco’s face paled. “She’s lying! She’s just a damn waitress! She’s trying to frame me!”

Marco raised his rifle toward Sophie.
