Chapter 2 - The Machine in the Fur

The seam of the pale-gold teddy bear tore open with a sharp, synthetic hiss.
White polyester stuffing erupted across the silk sheets of the nursery bed, flying into the dim air like artificial snow. Emma Reed’s fingers didn't hesitate. She plunged her hand deep into the center of the plush chest, past the soft batting, until her fingernails scraped against cold, industrial steel.
Declan Shaw’s hand clamped down over her wrist like a iron cuff. His face was inches from hers, his dark eyes ablaze with terrifying authority.
“I told you—” he began, his voice a low, lethal rumble.
“Look at it, Mr. Shaw!” Emma snapped, her voice trembling not with fear of him, but with raw, instinctual fury. “Look at what your daughters have been sleeping with!”
Declan’s gaze shifted from Emma’s eyes down to her hand.
Entangled in the white stuffing was a matte-black cylinder no larger than a deck of cards. Wrapped around its alloy casing was a thick silicone dampen ring, and mounted on its face was a tiny, recessed circuit board. A micro-LED light pulsed with a malicious, rhythmically steady red glow.
As the fabric was pulled away, the faint hum Emma had felt with her palm transformed into a high-pitched, metallic whine—a localized ultrasonic tone so dense it made the air inside the room vibrate.
Grace and June instantly dropped their hands from their ears, their crying hitching in their throats.
“It... it stopped buzzing inside my head,” Grace whimpered, her small body shuddering against the pillows. “It’s buzzing on the bed now.”
Declan let go of Emma’s wrist as if he had been burned. He reached out, his massive, calloused fingers taking the black device from the bear's hollow chest.
He was a man who ruled Chicago’s port shipping, a man who recognized military-grade hardware at a single glance. This was not a child’s toy component. It was a high-frequency acoustic sub-audible oscillator—a psychological torture device used in covert interrogation programs to induce extreme sleep deprivation, spatial paranoia, and auditory hallucinations in target subjects without leaving physical marks.
It was hardwired to an internal lithium-ion micro-battery, programmed to activate every night at precisely 3:00 a.m. for fifteen agonizing minutes before going dormant.
For fifty-six consecutive nights, his six-year-old twin daughters had been subjected to targeted neuro-acoustic torment.
The color drained completely from Declan’s face. The cold, unshakeable mafia boss who had survived three syndicate wars stood utterly frozen beside his children’s bed.
“A Belgian handmade toy...” Declan whispered, his voice cracking with a horrifying realization.
“Aunt Meredith gave it to us,” June whispered, pulling her blanket up to her chin, her swollen eyes darting nervously toward the nursery door. “She said if we ever took the bear out of our bed, the dark monster would come into our room and take Mama’s pictures away.”
Emma stood up slowly, wiping her hands on her apron, her chest heaving as she looked at Declan.
“They weren't having nightmares, Mr. Shaw,” Emma said, her voice dropping into a quiet, protective steel. “Someone was breaking your children’s minds from the inside out.”
Declan turned the black cylinder over in his hand. Stamped on the underside of the casing was a tiny serial code and a short-range wireless transmitter antenna. It wasn't just emitting an ultrasonic signal—it was transmitting a live audio feed of the nursery back to a receiver somewhere outside the house.
Whoever had put the bear in this room was listening to the twins scream every single night.
Declan’s jaw set like carved granite. The grief and exhaustion that had weighed on his broad shoulders for two months vanished instantly, replaced by an absolute, lethal clarity.
He reached into his tailored vest, pulled out his encrypted satellite phone, and pressed a single speed-dial key.
“Vance,” Declan said quietly into the receiver. “Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves the grounds. Turn off the main gate power, disarm the external security badges, and bring Meredith to my private study.”
May you like
He paused, his dark eyes locking onto Emma with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
“And Vance... make sure my sister doesn't carry her purse into the room.”
