Chapter 10 - Where the Light Lives

Six months later.

Summer had returned to the Hamptons. The ocean breeze blew soft and warm across the green lawns of the Shaw estate, carrying the sweet scent of blooming white jasmine and wild roses.

In the rear garden behind the mansion, a grand white marquee tent had been erected over the manicured lawn. Paved stone walkways were lined with hundreds of white orchids and silver lanterns.

Classical violin music drifted through the air as fifty close friends, family allies, and loyal estate staff gathered under the warm afternoon sun.

At the front of the floral altar stood Declan Shaw, looking impossibly handsome in a tailored black tuxedo. Standing beside him as his best man was Vance, wearing a crisp suit with a rare, genuine smile on his scarred face.

At the end of the white carpet aisle, seven-year-old Grace and June walked out, wearing matching silver flower-girl dresses, tossing fresh white rose petals from woven baskets. Their faces were radiant, their laughter ringing out like silver bells across the garden.

Then the music shifted into a slow, breathtaking melody.

Emma Reed stepped onto the white runner.

She wore an ivory lace gown that flowed around her like water, her long dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with tiny white flowers. She held a bouquet of pale orchids, her breath catching as her eyes locked onto Declan’s.

Declan watched her walk toward him, his heart hammering against his ribs, his eyes glistening with deep, profound emotion.

When she reached the altar, Declan stepped down, taking her soft hand into his big, warm palm, bringing it to his lips for a gentle kiss.

“You look breathtaking,” Declan whispered.

“You look pretty good yourself, crime boss,” Emma teased softly, her heart overflowing with pure happiness.

The minister stepped forward, opening his book.

“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to unite Declan Shaw and Emma Reed in holy matrimony...”

The ceremony was short, powerful, and filled with deep, silent reverence.

When the time came for the vows, Declan took both of Emma’s hands, looking directly into her eyes.

“Emma,” Declan said, his voice deep and strong, echoing softly through the quiet garden. “Six months ago, my world was dark, cold, and broken. I was a man trapped in shadows, unable to protect the things I loved most. You walked into my home not as a savior with weapons, but as a woman with a heart that listened when the rest of the world looked away.”

He squeezed her hands gently.

“You saved my daughters. You saved me. From this day forward, I promise to protect you, honor you, and love you with every breath in my body. My home is your home. My life is your life.”

Tears of joy spilled down Emma’s cheeks as she smiled up at him.

“Declan,” Emma whispered, her voice clear and sweet. “I came into this house looking for a job, but I found my family. I promise to stand by your side through every storm, to cherish our daughters, and to love you unconditionally for the rest of my days.”

“By the power vested in me,” the minister smiled broadly, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. Declan, you may kiss your bride.”

Declan didn't hesitate. He pulled Emma into his broad arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her deeply as the entire gathering erupted into joyous applause and cheers.

Grace and June ran up to the altar, throwing their arms around both of them, hugging their legs tightly.

“Mommy Emma!” June squealed happily.

Emma dropped to her knees, pulling both little girls into a fierce, warm embrace, kissing their cheeks while Declan knelt beside them, wrapping his big arms around all three of them.

That night, as the sun dipped low beneath the ocean horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of pink, gold, and violet, the mansion sat quiet and warm.

In the second-floor nursery, the high arch windows were wide open, letting in the cool, sweet evening breeze.

Grace and June lay tucked beneath their soft blankets, their eyes heavy with sleep. Beside their bed on a small wooden nightstand sat two brand-new, simple plush rabbits—soft, silent, and completely free of secrets.

Emma and Declan stood together in the doorway, their fingers intertwined, watching the twins drift off into peaceful, undisturbed slumber.

There were no screaming fits at 3:00 a.m. There were no buzzing monsters in the dark.

Only the quiet, steady rhythm of two healthy children breathing, safe in the arms of a father who loved them and a mother who had brought them home.

Declan leaned down, resting his cheek against Emma’s hair, his arm wrapping securely around her waist as they stood together in the warm light of their new beginning.

The dark was gone forever. And the light was here to stay.
