Chapter 7 - The Gathering at the Estate

Two weeks later.
The dark clouds that had hung over the Shaw estate for months had finally cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, crisp autumn morning.
The news of Meredith Shaw’s arrest for the murder of Clara Shaw and the psychological abuse of her nieces had sent shockwaves through the upper echelons of Chicago high society and the underground syndicate network. With Meredith and Julian behind bars facing life sentences without parole, Declan had executed a swift, ruthless takeover of the remaining family trusts, consolidating total power over the Shaw shipping empire.
Inside the mansion, the heavy blackout curtains had been pulled back, filling the long corridors with warm sunlight.
Downstairs in the grand kitchen, the aroma of fresh pancakes and maple syrup filled the air.
Grace and June sat at the marble island counter, wearing bright yellow dresses, their cheeks pink with health, their laughter echoing off the high ceilings.
Emma stood beside the stove, wearing a simple blue dress, flipping pancakes onto a silver platter while the twins giggled and competed over who could stack the highest tower of blueberries.
“Emma! Look!” Grace shouted, holding up a fresh drawing she had made with bright crayons.
It showed four figures standing in front of the mansion: Declan, Grace, June, and Emma, all holding hands beneath a giant yellow sun.
Emma smiled, stepping over to kiss the top of Grace’s head. “That is the most beautiful drawing I’ve ever seen, Grace.”
“Where’s the buzzing monster?” June asked innocently.
“The monster is gone forever, sweetheart,” Emma assured her, resting her hand on June’s shoulder. “It can never come back.”
The kitchen doors pushed open, and Declan walked in.
He was dressed in a tailored navy suit, but his tie was slightly loosened, his dark hair falling naturally over his forehead. The cold, haunted look that had plagued his eyes for months was completely gone, replaced by a deep, quiet peace.
The twins instantly jumped down from their barstools, sprinting across the polished floor.
“Daddy!” they shouted in unison, throwing their small arms around his legs.
Declan laughed—a rich, deep sound that made the kitchen staff stop and smile—and scooped both girls up into his broad arms, kissing their cheeks while they giggled hysterically.
“Have you two been bothering Emma all morning?” Declan asked, carrying them over to the counter.
“No! We made a drawing!” June declared proudly.
Declan set the girls back down on their stools and walked over to stand beside Emma at the stove. He looked down at the drawing on the counter, his eyes lingering on the small blue-dressed figure standing beside his daughters.
He looked at Emma, his dark eyes holding a warm, unspoken emotion that made a soft blush rise on her cheeks.
“The board meeting finished an hour ago,” Declan said quietly to Emma. “The shipping docks are fully secured. The entire syndicate knows the Shaw family is united.”

“I’m glad, Mr. Shaw,” Emma said softly.
“Declan,” he corrected gently, stepping half an inch closer to her. “In this house, my name is Declan.”
