Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Empire

By sunrise, the rain had cleared, leaving the Meridia estate glistening under a sharp, icy light.

Gabriel sat in his underground war room beneath the mansion—a reinforced concrete vault equipped with independent servers, satellite communications, and tactical monitors. Marcus sat beside him, typing rapidly on a secure terminal, while Emma sat near the door, holding a mug of tea, listening to the dark machinery of Gabriel’s world unfold.

“We ran the financial audit on Jonathan Hale’s offshore accounts, boss,” Marcus reported, dragging a series of bank statements across the primary screen. “It’s massive. Over the past twenty-four months, Hale has siphoned twenty-three million dollars from the Moretti shipping logistics accounts in Rotterdam and Panama.”

“How did he bypass my dual-signature protocol?” Gabriel asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“He didn't,” Marcus replied, looking up with a grave expression. “He used the medical power-of-attorney documents you signed for Lily’s treatment protocols. Tucked inside the medical release forms were authorization riders that granted Hale legal authority to liquidate auxiliary holding companies in the event of your personal incapacity or family emergency.”

Gabriel leaned back in his leather chair, a dark, cynical smile forming on his lips.

“He kept my daughter crippled to keep me emotionally shattered,” Gabriel said, connecting the horrifying pieces of the puzzle. “As long as I was flying across the world searching for medical miracles for Lily, I was signing whatever legal documents Hale put in front of me without reading the fine print.”

“And Dr. Vance?” Emma asked quietly from the corner.

Marcus pulled up Vance’s personal records. “Vance’s private gambling debts in Atlantic City were cleared eighteen months ago. A anonymous wire of four million dollars was made into his Swiss account from an entity controlled by the Romano crime family.”

The room went dead quiet.

The Romano family was the Moretti syndicate’s fiercest rival—a brutal, ruthless syndicate that had been trying to seize control of the eastern shipping ports for over a decade.

“Jonathan Hale wasn't just stealing,” Gabriel said, his eyes turning to black ice. “He was prepping a hostile takeover. Once Lily was permanently disabled and my public reputation was weakened by rumors of my mental instability, Hale was going to sell our port concessions to Romano.”

He stood up, towering over the steel console.

“Does Hale know we have the lab results?” Gabriel asked.

“No, boss,” Marcus said. “Dr. Vance is scheduled to come here at two o'clock today for Lily’s evening treatment. Hale is attending a board meeting at the Moretti Plaza at noon.”

Gabriel turned to face Emma. She looked small against the cold, industrial backdrop of the war room, but her chin was held high, her blue eyes clear and steady.

“Emma,” Gabriel said gently, stepping toward her. “I need to send you and the girls to my safe house in Vermont under armed escort. Once Hale realizes he’s exposed, things will get bloody.”

Emma set her tea mug down on the table and stood up, looking Gabriel straight in the eye.

“No,” she said firmly.

Gabriel blinked, surprised. “No?”

“If I leave with the girls now, Dr. Vance will notice,” Emma reasoned, her practical preschool-teacher logic shining through the terrifying mob drama. “He knows my schedule. If the house looks empty, he’ll call Hale, and Hale will run before you can secure your shipping ports. The girls and I stay here. We keep up the routine until Vance walks through that door.”

Marcus looked at Gabriel, a flicker of deep respect in his eyes. “She’s right, boss. The element of surprise is our only clean play.”

Gabriel looked down at Emma. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her jawline—a gesture so tender it caught both of them off guard.

“You are far braver than any man I employ, Emma Brooks,” Gabriel whispered softly.

A soft blush touched Emma’s cheeks, but she didn't step back. “I’m not brave, Mr. Moretti. I just care about those little girls. And I won't let bad men win.”

“Neither will I,” Gabriel promised. “Marcus, contact our security teams in Rotterdam and New York. Lock down every port terminal. At two o'clock, we close the trap.”
