Chapter 6 - The Siege of Meridia Estate

At 1:45 p.m., heavy grey clouds rolled back over Meridia, darkening the sky to a murky gloom.

Inside the nursery, Emma sat on the floor with Sophia and Lily. Lily was sitting up without her frame, stacking colorful wooden blocks into tall towers. Her right leg was warm and relaxed, free of the toxic cream for forty-eight hours.

Downstairs, the heavy wrought-iron gates of the estate swung open.

Dr. Vance’s German sedan pulled up the driveway. But this time, he wasn't alone. Behind his car was a black SUV with tinted windows.

In the basement war room, Marcus’s alarm monitors flashed red.

“Boss!” Marcus yelled into his earpiece. “Hale didn't go to the board meeting! He intercepted Vance down the road! They’ve brought five armed Romano hitmen with them!”

Gabriel was standing in the main foyer, dressed in a sleek black suit, a heavy silver pistol concealed inside his jacket.

“They know,” Gabriel said coldly into his comms unit. “Hale realized the port accounts were frozen twenty minutes ago. They aren't coming to treat Lily—they’re coming to clean house.”

Gabriel turned and ran up the grand staircase toward the nursery. “Emma! Panic room! Now!”

Inside the nursery, Emma heard the urgency in Gabriel’s voice over the internal intercom. Without wasting a single second, she scooped Lily up in her left arm, grabbed Sophia with her right, and rushed toward the hidden panel behind the master bedroom closet.

Suddenly, the glass windows of the downstairs patio shattered with a deafening crash.

Gunfire erupted through the lower level of the mansion—the sharp, violent cracks of high-caliber weapons echoing off the marble walls. Marcus and Gabriel’s security detail immediately engaged the intruders, turning the luxurious estate into a war zone.

Emma reached the master bedroom, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped sledgehammer. She pressed the hidden button inside the mahogany wardrobe. The back wall slid open, revealing a reinforced steel panic room stocked with emergency supplies and surveillance monitors.

She set Sophia down inside. “Stay here, sweetie! Don't make a sound!”

As she turned to place Lily inside, a heavy boot kicked open the bedroom door.

Dr. Vance stood in the doorway, his medical coat gone, replaced by a dark leather jacket. His face was twisted in manic desperation, a small silver handgun shaking in his gloved hand. Behind him stood Jonathan Hale, his pristine suit disheveled, his eyes wild with terror and rage.

“Where are the legal files, Emma?” Hale screamed, his voice cracking. “Where did Gabriel put the external hard drives?”

Emma stepped back, positioning her body directly between the two armed men and the open panic room door. She held Lily tightly against her chest, her arms locked around the toddler like steel bands.

“He knows everything, Jonathan,” Emma said, her voice impossibly steady despite the gunfire echoing from the hallway. “He knows about the money. He knows about the Romano syndicate. And he knows what you did to his daughter.”

“Shut up! Shut up!” Hale shrieked, advancing toward her. “That little cripple was my insurance policy! Gabriel was supposed to hand over the shipping keys today!”

Vance raised his gun, pointing it straight at Emma’s chest. “Step away from the door, girl! Or I’ll put a bullet through you and take the child myself!”

Emma didn't move an inch. She glared at Vance with cold, absolute disgust. “You are a disgrace to every doctor who ever took an oath.”

Vance’s finger tightened on the trigger.

BOOM.

A shot thundered through the room, but it didn't come from Vance’s weapon.

Dr. Vance’s eyes widened in shock as a bullet hole appeared in the center of his chest. He collapsed onto the hardwood floor like a felled oak.

Jonathan Hale spun around in horror, dropping his gun.

Gabriel Moretti stood in the shattered doorway, his suit torn, smoke rising from the barrel of his customized pistol. His eyes were dark, demonic, and radiating a aura of absolute destruction.

“Get away from my family,” Gabriel growled.

Hale fell to his knees, raising his hands frantically. “Gabriel! Please! It was Romano! They forced me! They threatened my life!”

Gabriel walked up to his former friend, grabbed him by the collar of his expensive jacket, and lifted him off his feet with one arm, slamming him against the wall.

“You didn't just steal my money, Jonathan,” Gabriel whispered, his voice dangerously soft, vibrating against Hale’s ear. “You touched my little girl.”

Gabriel didn't waste a bullet. With a single, devastating strike of his fist, he broke Hale’s jaw and knocked him unconscious, leaving him slumped in a heap on the floor.

Outside, the gunfire ceased. Marcus stepped into the room, holding a tactical rifle, nodding to Gabriel. “The estate is clear, boss. The Romano hitmen are neutralized. Federal authorities and our legal teams are securing the shipping ports as we speak.”

Gabriel took a deep breath, lowered his gun, and tossed it to Marcus.

He turned toward Emma.

She was still standing in front of the panic room door, her hair disheveled, holding Lily close. Sophia peeked out from behind the steel frame, wide-eyed but unhurt.

Gabriel walked up to Emma, his hands shaking slightly as he reached out to pull both her and his daughters into a fierce, protective embrace.

He rested his forehead against Emma’s shoulder, smelling the scent of lavender and rain in her hair.

“You’re safe,” Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with unexpressed tears. “It’s over. I’ve got you.”

Emma closed her eyes, letting her head rest against Gabriel’s chest, feeling the powerful, steady beat of his heart. For the first time since she had walked into Meridia estate, she felt completely, undeniably home.
