Chapter 2 - The Sigil of the Viper

The silence in the grand gallery was absolute, heavy enough to crush a man.

Alessandro Moretti remained on one knee before three-year-old Emma, his large, calloused hand anchored to the soft blue wool of her stuffed rabbit. His index finger slowly traced the stitched black emblem hidden beneath the toy’s folded ear—a double-headed serpent wrapped around a broken dagger.

It was not a child’s mark. It was the personal seal of La Vipera, the shadowy rogue faction that had ambushed Alessandro’s supply convoys in Calabria eight months ago, killing six of his best men and stealing forty million euros in untraceable bearer bonds.

“Where did you get this?” Alessandro asked again. His voice dropped to a register so low and quiet that it vibrated off the cold marble floorboards.

He was no longer looking at the child. His dark eyes rose, slow and lethal, locking directly onto me.

I pulled Emma back against my skirt, my fingers trembling as I shielded her tiny frame. “It... it was a gift. From my husband.”

A rustle of silk and heavy wool rippled through the gallery as the leaders of the twelve crime families leaned forward. Don Ricci, the white-haired patriarch of the Sicilian faction, narrowed his aged eyes. Beside him, Don Romano—Vivian’s father—adjusted his velvet collar, his knuckles turning chalk-white against his golden cane.

“Your husband?” Alessandro stood up in one fluid movement. Towering six feet four inches in his dark tailored suit, he seemed to swallow every ray of light from the crystal chandeliers overhead. “Your husband was Leo Bennett. A mid-level logistics supervisor at the eastern docks who died in a hit-and-run two years ago.”

“Yes,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “He gave it to Emma the morning before he went to work. The morning he never came home.”

Vivian Romano let out a harsh, melodramatic laugh, taking a step toward Alessandro and placing a jeweled hand on his arm. “Alessandro, darling, this is absurd! You’re listening to the rambling of a penniless widow and a toddler. The maid probably bought the toy at a flea market in the lower slums. We have eighty guests waiting in the ballroom. Don’t ruin our engagement celebration over a piece of cheap cloth!”

Alessandro didn't look at her. He didn't blink.

He slowly looked down at Vivian’s hand resting on his sleeve. “Take your hand off me, Vivian.”

Vivian froze, her red lips parting in shock. “Alessandro—”

“Remove your hand,” he repeated, his tone so devoid of emotion it sent a shiver straight down my spine.

She snatched her hand back as if burned, her face turning a blotchy, furious red.

Alessandro turned his attention to his head of security, Marco, who stood like an iron statue by the arched entryway. “Lock the gates. No one leaves Villa Moretti. Shut down the private airfield, disable the garage lifts, and scramble the signal jammers. If a single car moves within three miles of this estate, sink it.”

Pandemonium exploded across the hall.

Don Romano slammed his cane against the floor, stepping forward with his chest puffed out. “Moretti! You cannot hold the heads of twelve families hostage inside your home! We came here to celebrate your union with my daughter, not to be treated like prisoners!”

“You are not prisoners, Romano,” Alessandro said, turning to face the older man with lethal grace. “You are guests. Until I find out how a dead dock supervisor’s daughter ended up with the private sigil of the man who tried to murder me in Calabria.”

He reached down, gently taking the blue rabbit from Emma’s hands.

For a second, I thought Emma would scream or fight back as she usually did with strangers. But she simply looked up into Alessandro’s cold, stern face with her wide blue eyes, sucking her thumb.

“Mr. Bunny is heavy today,” Emma murmured innocently. “He has a rock in his belly.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed instantly. He held the stuffed animal up to the chandelier light. With his thumb, he felt the lower abdomen of the wool rabbit. His jaw tightened.

There wasn't just cotton inside. There was a hard, rectangular mass tucked deep within the padding.

Alessandro looked at me, a dangerous spark flashing in his dark hazel eyes. “Mrs. Bennett. You and your daughter are coming with me to my study. Marco, double the guard on the grand ballroom. If any don or lieutenant attempts to use a satellite phone or leave their designated quarters, shoot them.”

Vivian stepped into his path, her red gown swishing violently. “You’re taking the maid to your private study? What about me?! What about our engagement?!”

Alessandro stopped inches from her face, leaning down slightly. “The engagement is suspended. And if I find out your father’s family had anything to do with what is inside this toy, Vivian... a broken engagement will be the least of your concerns.”

He turned on his heel and gestured for me to follow.

With Emma clutched tightly in my arms and my heart beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs, I walked past twelve stunned, silent mafia lords, stepping directly into the lion’s den.
