Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Vow

One year later.
The Cathedral of Sant'Ambrogio in the heart of Milan was filled to capacity with over eight hundred guests.
Garlands of white roses and woven ivy draped from the soaring Gothic arches, and sunlight poured through the stained-glass windows, painting the aisle in brilliant hues of ruby, sapphire, and gold.
In the front pews sat the heads of all twelve crime families, dressed in their finest attire, standing at absolute attention. Beside them sat politicians, judges, foreign ambassadors, and community leaders from every corner of Italy.
At the altar stood Alessandro Moretti, looking impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. Beside him stood Marco, holding two small velvet ring boxes.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open.
The grand organ boomed, filling the sacred space with a triumphant, soaring melody.
Walking down the long marble aisle, holding a small basket of white rose petals, was four-year-old Emma. She wore a lovely white lace dress with a tiny blue ribbon wrapped around her waist. Clutched securely in her small arm was her famous blue wool rabbit, now sporting a tiny black bow tie to match Alessandro’s tuxedo.
Behind her came me.
My wedding gown was a masterpiece of Italian silk and delicate lace, with a long, sweeping train that glided effortlessly over the polished marble floor. I held a bouquet of fresh white lilies, my heart singing with a joy so vast and powerful it felt like a dream.
As I reached the altar, Alessandro stepped down to take my hand. His fingers were warm, steady, and filled with deep devotion as he lifted my veil, looking into my eyes with unconditional love.
“You are the most breathtaking sight in the world, Clara,” he whispered softly.
“And you are my home, Alessandro,” I replied.
The Cardinal stepped forward, his voice echoing across the silent cathedral as he performed the ancient sacred rites.
When it came time to exchange vows, Alessandro took my hands in his, looking directly into my eyes without looking at his prepared papers.
“Clara,” he said, his voice deep and clear, ringing out for everyone in Milan to hear. “I used to believe that strength meant standing alone in the dark. I believed that power was built on fear, iron, and silence. But the day you walked into my life, you showed me that true strength is born from love, courage, and the bravery to protect those who cannot protect themselves. I promise to honor you, respect you, and stand as your shield for all the days of my life.”
Tears of pure happiness overflowed my lashes as I looked up at the man who had turned my darkest night into the brightest morning.
“Alessandro,” I spoke, my voice trembling with emotion. “You saved my daughter, you honored my past, and you gave us a future where we no longer have to run. I give you my heart, my loyalty, and my life, forever.”
“By the authority vested in me,” the Cardinal proclaimed, lifting his hands in blessing, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder.”
Alessandro didn't wait another second. He pulled me into his arms and kissed me deeply, as the entire cathedral erupted into thunderous, roaring applause.
Emma jumped up and down beside us, throwing rose petals into the air and cheering at the top of her lungs.
We turned toward the grand aisle, hand in hand, stepping out into the bright Milanese sunshine.
The maids no longer bowed in fear. The crime bosses bowed in genuine respect. The streets were safe, my daughter was thriving, and the future was ours to build.
