Chapter 6 - The Trial of Twelve

The grand ballroom of Villa Moretti was flooded with bright white light.

The twelve crime bosses of Milan sat around an immense oval mahogany table, surrounded by fifty heavily armed enforcers standing along the perimeter walls. The air was thick with smoke, tension, and the heavy weight of absolute authority.

At the head of the table sat Alessandro Moretti.

Beside him, seated in a high-backed velvet chair—not in a maid’s uniform, but in an elegant black silk dress provided by Alessandro’s personal tailors—sat me. Emma slept peacefully in an adjoining private lounge under Marco’s watchful eye.

On the table in front of us lay the decoded micro-drive, a thick stack of printed financial ledgers, and the blue wool rabbit.

“The evidence is conclusive,” Don Ricci announced, his raspy voice echoing off the gilded ceiling as he closed the binder in front of him. He looked across the table at the empty chair where Don Romano had sat hours before. “The Romano family orchestrated the Calabria ambush and ordered the assassination of Leo Bennett. The council approves Don Moretti’s execution of complete asset seizure against House Romano.”

Mutterings of agreement rippled across the table. In the world of the syndicate, treason against the Don was the one crime that allowed no negotiation, no mercy, and no second chances.

“There is one remaining matter,” Don Ricci continued, turning his sharp, ancient eyes toward me. “Mrs. Bennett and her daughter are non-civilians who possess high-level knowledge of syndicate operations, internal ledgers, and council identities.”

A heavy, predatory stillness descended over the room. Several bosses shifted in their chairs, their eyes locking onto me like hawks measuring prey.

I sat up straight, refusing to cower. I had faced down a gunman hours ago; I would not bow before men in expensive suits.

“Mrs. Bennett is the widow of a man who died defending this empire,” Alessandro’s voice broke through the silence, loud and unwavering. He stood up, placing his large hand over mine on the polished mahogany table. “And as of tonight, she is under the permanent protection of House Moretti.”

Don Ricci raised an eyebrow. “Protection? What kind of protection, Alessandro? A pension? A house in the suburbs? You cannot leave a woman who holds our ledgers outside the family circle.”

Alessandro looked down at me, his hazel eyes burning with a deep, fierce resolve that made my pulse jump.

“She will not be outside the family circle,” Alessandro declared loudly, his voice ringing through the ballroom for all twelve families to hear. “Clara Bennett will stay at Villa Moretti as my personal advisor. And when the period of mourning for her late husband is fully honored, she will take her rightful place as the matriarch of this empire.”

A collective gasp echoed across the ballroom.

I stared at Alessandro in absolute astonishment. My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.

“Alessandro...” I whispered.

He looked down at me, his cold mafia exterior completely melting away, revealing the raw sincerity beneath. “Your husband gave his life for my family, Clara. Allow me to spend the rest of mine protecting yours.”

Don Ricci studied the two of us for a long, silent moment. Slowly, a small, knowing smile cracked the old Sicilian’s wrinkled face. He raised his crystal glass of scotch into the air.

“To House Moretti,” Don Ricci toasted smoothly. “And to the new Queen of Milan.”

One by one, the eleven remaining mafia bosses stood up, raising their glasses in unanimous respect to the woman who had walked into their villa as a maid, and walked out as the most powerful figure in the city.
