Chapter 8 - The Alliance of Ashes

Friday night at the Drake Hotel was an exercise in dangerous opulence.

The Grand Ballroom was lit by massive crystal chandeliers that cast sparkling golden light across marble floors, velvet-draped walls, and silver champagne fountains. Over two hundred guests filled the room—corrupt politicians, high-ranking police officials, shipping magnates, and the crime bosses of five states, all wearing tuxedos and evening gowns.

Underneath the music of the live jazz quartet, the air was thick with tension.

Everyone had heard the rumors. Everyone knew that the merger between the Hart and Vale empires was hanging by a thread of blood.

At the head table near the raised stage sat Marcus Hart. He looked like a ghost in a dark tuxedo, his hands trembling as he leaned on his golden cane, his pale face sunken. Beside him stood Julian, smiling smoothly, greeting visiting bosses with warm handshakes and expensive cigars.

At 8:30 PM, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.

The chatter in the room died instantly. The jazz quartet stumbled to a sudden, awkward halt.

Dominic Vale walked into the room.

He looked magnificent—a tall, imposing shadow in a midnight-black tuxedo, his broad shoulders filling out the tailored wool, his gray eyes scanning the room like a hawk looking for prey.

And walking beside him, her arm looped gracefully through his, was Evelyn Hart.

She wore a breathtaking crimson silk gown that clung to her figure like liquid fire. Her dark hair fell in soft, elegant waves over one shoulder, exposing a dazzling diamond necklace around her throat. Her face was calm, radiant, and completely unbothered.

The room gasped as one collective entity.

Julian Hart’s cigar slipped from his fingers, hitting the marble floor with a tiny shower of sparks. His face turned the color of wet chalk.

"Impossible..." Julian whispered, his jaw dropping open.

Marcus Hart stood up from his chair so fast his golden cane clattered against the table. "Evelyn?" he choked out, tears instantly welling in his old, tired eyes. "Evelyn! You're... you're alive!"

Dominic and Evelyn walked down the central aisle together, the crowd parting before them like water before the prow of a battleship.

They stopped at the foot of the head table.

"Good evening, Uncle Julian," Evelyn said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You look surprised to see me. You look as if you’ve seen a ghost."

Julian swallowed hard, scrambling to regain his composure, stepping in front of Marcus defensively.

"Dominic Vale!" Julian shouted, trying to project authority to the watching bosses. "What is the meaning of this? You told me you were holding my niece hostage! You accused her of murdering your nephew!"

Dominic took a step forward, resting one hand casually in his trousers pocket, his presence filling the entire room with an inescapable, suffocating pressure.

"I never said she murdered my nephew, Julian," Dominic said calmly, his voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "I said someone tried to murder my nephew."

"The maid confessed!" Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the grand balconies overlooking the room, waiting for the Falcone hitmen to appear. "The maid said Evelyn brought a blade into the nursery!"

"The maid was a snake paid three hundred thousand dollars to drop toxic foxglove extract into Noah’s baby oil," Evelyn declared, taking a step toward her uncle, her voice ringingly clear. "An extract that caused complete respiratory failure on Tuesday afternoon."

A loud, shock-filled murmur swept through the assembled crime bosses.

"Lies!" Julian spat, pointing a trembling finger at her. "She’s insane! She lost her medical license for a reason! She’s trying to ruin our family!"

"I lost my medical license because I refused to lie on a report, Julian," Evelyn said coldly. "And I brought a blade into that nursery because my nephew’s throat was closed, and I had thirty seconds to save his life."

She raised her hand and gestured toward the side entrance of the ballroom.

The double doors opened once more.

Mateo walked into the room, pushing a sleek, high-end pediatric stroller. Sitting upright inside the stroller, wearing a tiny black bow tie and smiling curiously at the bright lights, was seven-month-old Noah Vale—a small, neat white bandage covering the healing tracheostomy site on his neck, completely healthy and breathing fine.

Beside the stroller walked two uniformed top-tier pediatric surgeons from Saint Jude’s Hospital, holding official medical charts.

The ballroom erupted into loud, shocked commotion.

Marcus Hart dropped to his knees, weeping openly as he looked at the living, breathing child. "He’s alive... my God, the boy is alive!"

Julian backed away toward the stage stairs, his face slick with cold sweat. "This... this is a setup! Falcone!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, looking up toward the third-floor balconies. "FALCONE! NOW!"

Nothing happened.

The balconies remained silent.

Dominic raised his right hand and snapped his fingers once.

From the upper gallery doors, four of Dominic’s security guards stepped forward, tossing three heavy, black duffel bags over the brass railing.

The bags fell thirty feet, crashing onto the marble floor right at Julian’s feet, unzipping on impact. Inside were dozens of silenced weapons, tactical vests, and encrypted radios taken from the Falcone hitmen who had been quietly eliminated on the third floor twenty minutes earlier.

Julian collapsed backward onto the stage steps, his legs completely giving out beneath him.
