Chapter 9 - Judgment at the Gates

Dominic walked slowly up the stage steps, stopping three feet above Julian, looking down at the shivering, disgraced snake who had tried to destroy two empires.
"Looking for your friends from Detroit, Julian?" Dominic asked softly, pulling a digital audio recorder from his tuxedo pocket and pressing play.
The ballroom speakers crackled to life, amplfying the recorded phone conversation across the room in crystal-clear audio:
"My brother is completely broken... My men will be stationed on the third floor of the Drake Hotel... The moment you step out of the banquet hall, we wipe out Dominic Vale... The northern and southern routes belong to us by midnight Friday..."
Julian’s own voice echoed off the gilded ceiling, condemning him before every crime boss, politician, and family leader in the Midwest.
Marcus Hart pulled himself up by the edge of the table, his pale face flushed with an absolute, terrifying rage he hadn't felt in twenty years.
"Julian..." Marcus rasped, his voice shaking with deep, broken fury. "You... you tried to kill my daughter. You tried to murder an infant. You sold my family to Detroit."
Julian scrambled backward on his hands and knees. "Marcus! Brother, please! They framed me! It’s a trick! The audio is fake!"
"Shut up!" Marcus roared, bringing his golden cane down hard against the wooden table, shattering the glass champagne flutes. He turned to look at Dominic and Evelyn, his eyes full of profound shame and gratitude. "Dominic... my daughter... take him. Do whatever the law of the syndicate demands."
Dominic looked down at Julian.
"The law of the syndicate," Dominic said, his voice dropping into an icy register that made the entire ballroom freeze, "is very clear about traitors who touch children."
Mateo and two large guards stepped onto the stage, grabbing Julian by his arms and hauling him off the floor as he screamed and kicked wildly.
"Dominic, please! Evelyn, I’m your uncle! I’m your blood!" Julian shrieked as he was dragged toward the back exit of the hotel. "EVELYN!"
Evelyn didn't even turn her head to watch him leave. She stood calmly beside the stroller, leaning down to adjust Noah’s tiny bow tie, her face serene, complete, and unbothered.
Dominic walked down the stage steps, stopping beside Marcus Hart. He placed a steady, respectful hand on the old man's shoulder.
"Your medical team has been replaced, Marcus," Dominic said quietly. "Evelyn has reviewed your heart medication. You’re going to be okay."
Marcus looked up at Dominic, then at his daughter, tears streaming down his weathered cheeks. He reached out, taking Dominic’s hand and squeezing it tightly.
"Thank you, son," Marcus whispered.
Dominic turned back to face the entire ballroom of assemble leaders. He reached out his hand to Evelyn.
She stepped forward, placing her hand gently in his.

"The contract between the Hart and Vale families is signed tonight," Dominic announced, his deep voice carrying across the entire grand room with absolute, unquestioned authority. "The northern routes and the southern docks are unified under one crest. Anyone who stands against us will meet the exact same fate as Julian Hart and the Falcone syndicate."
The entire room stood up as one, raising their champagne glasses in a silent, reverent toast to the new undisputed king and queen of Chicago's underworld.
