Chapter 10 - The Empire Restored

Six months later.
The sun was shining brightly over the Vale estate on the outskirts of Chicago. The dark, cold winter had finally given way to a lush, warm spring. Green grass stretched across the manicured lawns, and the scent of blooming white roses filled the fresh afternoon air.
On the stone terrace overlooking the gardens, a large round table was set for afternoon tea.
Sitting in a comfortable armchair, looking healthier and stronger than he had in years, was Marcus Hart, reading the morning financial papers while sipping green tea.
A few feet away on a soft wool blanket spread across the grass, eight-month-old Noah was crawling happily after a small, soft leather ball, letting out bright, energetic giggles as he pushed it through the grass.
Standing near the terrace balustrade was Evelyn.
She was wearing an elegant cream-colored dress, her dark hair shining in the sunlight. In her hand, she held an official letter stamped with the state seal of Illinois.
Dominic walked out onto the terrace behind her, carrying two glasses of iced tea. He wore a simple white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking relaxed, powerful, and completely at peace.
He wrapped one arm around her waist, pulling her gently against his side, kissing her temple.
"What's that?" Dominic asked, looking down at the letter in her hand.
Evelyn smiled—a warm, genuine smile that lit up her entire face, a smile that was no longer rare or guarded.
"It’s from the State Medical Board," she said, holding up the paper. "They’ve officially cleared my record. The lawsuits filed by the corrupt administration two years ago have been dismissed with prejudice. My medical license has been reinstated."
Dominic looked at the paper, then down into her eyes, his thumb gently caressing her waist.
"Congratulations, Dr. Hart," Dominic murmured softly.
"Dr. Vale, actually," she corrected with a playful, sharp tilt of her chin, teasing him with that subtle edge he had grown to love above all things.
Dominic let out a low laugh, pulling her closer, pressing his forehead against hers.
"So," Dominic asked softly, "are you going back to the hospital?"
Evelyn turned her head, looking out over the terrace toward the garden.
She looked at her father, who was smiling as he watched his grandson play. She looked at Noah, who had successfully caught his leather ball and was holding it up proudly like a trophy. And finally, she looked back at Dominic—the man who had trusted her with his life, his nephew, and his empire when the rest of the world called her a monster.
"The hospital has plenty of surgeons, Dominic," Evelyn said, leaning up on her tiptoes to press a gentle, loving kiss against his lips. "Right now, the chief of pediatric medicine for the new Vale-Hart Children’s Foundation has an empire to run with her husband."
Dominic’s gray eyes softened with a deep, fierce devotion. He wrapped both arms around her, holding her tight against his chest as the warm spring wind rustled through the rose garden.
Down on the lawn, Noah let out a happy, babbling shout, waving his small hands toward them in the bright afternoon sun.

They had built a family.
