Chapter 4 - The Golden Morning

The preschool courtyard was a chaotic symphony of screaming children, spilled juice boxes, and anxious parents clutching coffee cups. When the midnight-blue Alfa Romeo pulled up to the curb, conversations abruptly died.

Mothers and fathers turned, their eyes widening as Aleandro Moretti stepped out of the driver’s side.

Even out of his element, Aleandro radiated an undeniable aura of raw authority. He didn't walk like an ordinary civilian; every step was measured, silent, and predatory. When he walked around to the passenger side to open the door for Sophia, three different fathers instinctively took a step back.

Sophia hopped out, landing squarely on her sparkly sneakers, and immediately grabbed Aleandro’s large, calloused hand with her tiny fingers.

“See?” Sophia announced proudly to a group of children staring from the sandbox. “I told you my daddy was coming.”

Maria, trailing a few steps behind, felt every pair of eyes on her. Whispers rippled through the crowd of parents. Wordlessly, the preschool director—a nervous middle-aged woman named Mrs. Gable—hurried over, wringing her hands together.

“Mr... Mr. Moretti?” Mrs. Gable stammered, recognizing the face that occasionally flashed across local news broadcasts regarding high-profile real estate acquisitions. “We didn't realize... that is, Sophia’s records indicated—”

“Her guardian for today is present,” Aleandro said smoothly, his voice cutting through her panic with effortless calm. “Lead the way to the classroom, Mrs. Gable.”

For the next two hours, the most feared man in New York participated in finger-painting, building crooked towers out of wooden blocks, and sitting cross-legged on a tiny blue carpet while a teacher read a story about a runaway bunny.

Aleandro sat rigidly, his long legs folded awkwardly beneath the miniature table, looking entirely out of place yet completely committed. When Sophia proudly smeared purple paint across a sheet of construction paper and pressed her palm against it, she immediately grabbed Aleandro’s hand and pressed his thumb into the wet ink.

“Put it on mine,” she commanded.

Aleandro looked down at the bright purple paint staining his skin. For a man who spent his life washing blood from his hands, the vibrant, messy color felt strangely permanent. Without a word, he pressed his thumb onto the paper next to hers, creating a matching print.

Sophia beamed. “We’re partners now.”

“Partners,” Aleandro echoed quietly.

As the children filed out toward the playground for recess, Maria watched from the benches, a bittersweet ache blooming in her chest. She saw the way Aleandro watched Sophia run toward the swings, his dark eyes scanning every perimeter fence, every shadow, every passing pedestrian with the intense vigilance of a general guarding a fortress.

He wasn't just playing a part. He was protecting her.

And somewhere out there, Maria knew, invisible enemies were circling closer.
