Chapter 10 - A New Dawn for the Moretti Family

Six months later, the autumn leaves of New York turned a brilliant shade of gold and amber, painting the city in warm hues of red and orange.

On a crisp Saturday afternoon, the front gates of the Moretti estate swung open not for black sedans or armed capos, but for a bright red school bus decorated with autumn banners.

Sophia bounded down the metal steps of the bus, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders, her pigtails tied with yellow ribbons.

Waiting at the bottom of the steps was Aleandro Moretti. He wasn't wearing a funeral suit, nor was he holding a pistol. He wore a simple wool coat, his hands tucked into his pockets, a warm, unmistakable look of pride in his dark eyes.

“Daddy!” Sophia squealed, running full speed into his open arms.

Aleandro scooped her up effortlessly, swinging her into the air until she giggled delightedly. “How was school, partner?”

“We learned how to make pumpkin pie!” Sophia announced proudly, resting her head against his shoulder. “And Mrs. Gable said my daddy is the nicest daddy in the whole class.”

Maria walked up behind them, carrying a picnic basket, her face radiant with a happiness she had thought was lost forever the day Miguel died. Aleandro reached out with his free arm, pulling Maria close against his side, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.

The underworld still whispered about the ruthless boss of New York, the man who controlled the ports, the unions, and the streets. But inside the walls of the estate, there was no mafia boss, no fear, and no shadows—only a family, healed by an innocent question asked by a three-year-old girl who had dared to borrow a king.

As the sun dipped below the Manhattan skyline, casting a golden glow over the autumn trees, Aleandro looked down at Maria and Sophia, knowing that the greatest victory of his life had nothing to do with power, and everything to do with love.
