Chapter 9 - The Debt Paid in Full

Three days later, the sun shone brightly over the grand gardens of the Moretti estate.

The news had already rippled through the underworld: the internal coup had failed, Marco Ricci was gone forever, and Aleandro Moretti had restructured the entire syndicate with absolute, unyielding authority. But inside the private family quarters, the terrifying mafia boss was currently engaged in a far more critical mission.

He was sitting on a velvet lawn chair, wearing a casual linen shirt, while a three-year-old girl in a bright yellow dress meticulously placed a daisy crown on his dark hair.

“There,” Sophia declared, stepping back and tilting her head to inspect her handiwork. “Now you look like a real king.”

Maria walked out onto the patio carrying a tray of lemonade, smiling softly as she watched the most feared man in New York wear a crown of wildflowers without a single trace of self-consciousness.

“He looks more like a garden gnome, sweetheart,” Maria teased gently, setting the tray down on the glass table.

“I do not,” Aleandro retorted, though a genuine, effortless smile broke across his face—the first real smile anyone on the estate had seen in over a decade.

Maria sat down across from him, her heart no longer fluttering with panic, but settling into a quiet, profound warmth. “The school called this morning, Mr. Moretti. Mrs. Gable said Sophia’s art project won first place in the district exhibition.”

Aleandro reached up and touched the daisy crown resting on his head. “Naturally. We’re partners.”

Sophia climbed eagerly onto his lap, wrapping her small arms around his neck. “Are you going to stay with us forever, mister?”

Aleandro wrapped his strong, protective arms around the little girl, holding her close, feeling the steady, living beat of her heart against his chest—a sharp contrast to the cold metal of guns and velvet tables.

He looked up, meeting Maria’s warm, grateful eyes across the table.

“Forever,” Aleandro whispered, his voice steady and absolute. “I’m not going anywhere.”
