Chapter 7 - Unmasking Margaret

The air in the subterranean tunnel felt suddenly starved of oxygen.
Hannah stood frozen, her mind desperately calculating angles, cover, anything to shield Lily and Emma from the impending gunfire. There was no cover. The tunnel was a straight, narrow stone tube.
“You’re a monster, Margaret,” Hannah said, her voice steadying as pure, incandescent rage pushed aside her terror. “You killed the woman who trusted you, you tortured her daughter with lies, and for what? A cut of Victor Vance’s dirty money?”
“Money is temporary, my dear,” Margaret replied, her voice smooth as silk as she gestured slightly to her gunmen. “Order is eternal. The Hale empire was built by men like Roman—men who need strong walls and iron-fisted keepers. Claire wanted to burn those walls down. She threatened to expose the offshore accounts we used to launder funds for the syndicate. She had to be silenced.”
“And me?” Hannah glared at her. “Why hunt me down after five years?”
“Because your sister was cleverer than you think,” Margaret sneered, taking another step forward. “Before she died, Claire stashed a digital backup of every financial transfer, every forged signature, and every confession in a secure vault—and she gave the decryption key to the one person she trusted implicitly.”
Margaret’s cold eyes shifted down from Hannah to three-year-old Emma, who was still clutching the stitched-up teddy bear in her tiny arms.
“The child,” Margaret murmured. “The key isn't on a server, is it, Hannah? It’s embedded in the cryptographic serial number of the trust fund Claire secretly established for her niece under your real maiden name. Once I eliminate you and the bastard child, the trust reverts to the estate—and Victor Vance legally controls the entire portfolio.”
“You’re insane,” Hannah whispered.
“I’m practical,” Margaret corrected sharply. She nodded to the gunman on her left. “Finish them. Make it look like a tragic drowning in the lake.”
The gunman raised his weapon, aligning the sights squarely on Hannah’s chest.
Hannah closed her eyes, wrapping her arms around Lily and Emma, bracing for the impact.
Clang!
A deafening roar echoed through the stone tunnel, followed by a shower of sparks as a high-caliber round smashed into the stone wall inches from the gunman’s head.
The gunman dropped his weapon with a yelp, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he spun around.
From the darkness of the tunnel entrance behind Margaret, a single figure emerged, shrouded in smoke and carrying a smoking assault rifle.
Roman Hale.
His face was a mask of cold, unmitigated slaughter. His eyes locked onto Margaret Sloan with the terrifying intensity of an executioner.
“You touched my daughter,” Roman’s voice boomed through the subterranean vault, vibrating off the stone walls with lethal force. “And you hunted my late wife’s family under my own roof.”
Margaret spun around, her composure cracking for the first time. She grabbed for the pistol tucked inside her coat, but before her fingers could wrap around the grip, Thomas Grant stepped out of the shadows beside Roman and kicked the weapon out of her hand.
It clattered across the stone floor.
“It’s over, Margaret,” Thomas said coldly, slamming her wrists into heavy steel zip-ties with brutal efficiency.
Margaret snarled, spitting blood as Thomas shoved her against the damp wall. She glared past them at Roman, who was already dropping his rifle and rushing forward to drop to his knees in front of Lily and Emma.
“Daddy!” Lily sobbed, throwing her arms around Roman’s neck so hard he nearly lost his balance.
Roman held his daughter tightly, burying his face in her hair, his shoulders shaking with a mixture of overwhelming relief and burning vengeance. He looked up, his gaze locking onto Hannah, who was trembling violently as she pulled Emma into her lap.

“Hannah,” Roman said, his voice thick with emotion. “You protected them.”
Hannah nodded, tears finally breaking free and streaming down her cheeks. “I promised Claire I would.”
