Chapter 8 - The Trap Closes

Two hours later, the estate was flooded with federal agents, state police units, and forensic investigators.

Victor Vance didn't even make it out of his downtown high-rise boardroom. As the boardroom doors were kicked open by federal marshals, Roman had walked in behind them, dropped a thick manila folder containing Margaret’s confession and the decrypted offshore bank records onto the glass table, and watched in silence as Victor was placed in handcuffs and led out in front of the financial press corps.

The hostile takeover was dead. The conglomerate was intact. But for Roman Hale, corporate victory was secondary.

Back at the Greenwich estate, the morning sun was finally beginning to pierce through the heavy autumn clouds, casting golden light across the manicured lawns.

In the grand drawing room, the shattered fireplace poker had been removed, and the Persian rug was clean.

Lily sat on the sofa beside Emma, both of them quietly playing with the repaired teddy bear. The tiny digital recorder sat on the coffee table—its contents now securely backed up on three different encrypted servers, its secret finally out in the open.

Roman stood by the tall arched window, looking out over the misty lake where Margaret Sloan and her co-conspirators had been loaded into police transport vans an hour earlier.

The door opened quietly.

Hannah stepped into the drawing room, holding a tray with two cups of hot coffee. She had changed out of her housekeeper’s uniform into a simple dark sweater and trousers.

“Mr. Hale,” Hannah said softly, setting the tray on the coffee table.

Roman turned around, his hard expression softening as he looked at her. He walked over, picking up one of the cups, but instead of taking it, he extended his hand toward her.

“Call me Roman, Hannah,” he said quietly. “After everything you’ve done... calling you Mr. Hale feels absurd.”

Hannah hesitated, then slipped her hand into his. Her grip was firm, calloused from years of hard work and survival, but warm.

“What happens now?” Hannah asked, glancing toward the girls. “Emma and I... we can’t stay here as housekeepers anymore. Not after all of this.”

“You’re not staying as housekeepers,” Roman replied, his voice firm and absolute. “You’re family, Hannah. Claire’s family is my family. The cottage by the north gardens has been completely renovated. It’s yours and Emma’s for as long as you want it. No staff duties. No hiding.”

Hannah looked up into his eyes, searching for any trace of the cold, untouchable mob boss the city whispered about. All she found was a grieving father who had finally found the truth—and a man ready to protect what mattered most.

“Thank you, Roman,” she whispered.
