Chapter 9 - The Reckoning on the Estate

By evening, the media storm had begun to settle, replaced by the quiet, heavy peace that only true resolution could bring.
The federal prosecutors had confirmed that Margaret Sloan and Victor Vance would face federal racketeering, grand larceny, and conspiracy charges carrying mandatory life sentences without parole. The corrupt coroner who falsified Claire’s autopsy report had already turned state’s evidence, throwing himself at the mercy of the court in exchange for witness protection.

Lily smiled, her breathing deepening as sleep finally took her.
Roman gently laid her down in her bed, pulling the quilt up to her chin. He stood quietly, walking over to the window that looked out over the sprawling gardens and the shimmering lake beyond.
The wind rustled through the autumn leaves, carrying a crisp, clean scent that felt like a new beginning.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small digital recorder. He pressed the power button one last time, listening to Claire’s voice whisper through the small speaker:

“If you found this, then I suppose Teddy finally needed surgery... Remember, broken things are not always ruined. Sometimes they just need someone patient enough to find where they came apart.”
Roman clicked the device off, slipped it into his breast pocket close to his heart, and turned away from the window.
