Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Downstairs in the sprawling, marble-tiled drawing room, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

The household staff sat in tight, uneasy clusters on the velvet sofas. Mrs. Gable, the elderly head cook who had served the Bolaro family for over twenty years, was wringing her hands so hard her knuckles were white. Clara, the daytime nanny, was staring fixedly at the floor, her face pale. Dr. Crane paced back and forth near the French doors, muttering angrily under his breath about unlawful detention and medical malpractice lawsuits.

Marcus stood by the doorway, his arms crossed over his massive chest, holding a heavy tablet displaying the house's internal security camera feeds.

The door opened silently, and Lorenzo walked into the room, flanked by Maya.

The entire room went dead silent. You could hear the grandfather clock ticking in the corner.

Lorenzo walked to the center of the room, his dark gaze sweeping over every face present. He didn't raise his voice, but the terrifying authority radiating from him commanded absolute submission.

"I’m going to make this very simple," Lorenzo began, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor. "Someone in this room has been systematically poisoning my son for eleven days. Someone smuggled custom medical dosing caps into my kitchen, mixed sedatives into his evening formula, and watched him suffer night after night."

Gasps of horror rippled through the staff. Mrs. Gable burst into tears, covering her face with her apron.

"Mr. Bolaro, this is insane!" Dr. Crane protested, stepping forward. "You cannot accuse us of—"

"Shut your mouth, Victor," Lorenzo snapped, not even glancing at the doctor. "I didn't say who it was yet. But here is what is going to happen. My security team is currently tearing through every electronic device, every locker, every pocket, and every personal item belonging to everyone in this room. If we find the remaining supply of those dosing caps in your possession, you won't live long enough to see a courtroom."

He paused, letting the threat sink deep into their bones.

"However," Lorenzo continued smoothly, "if whoever is responsible steps forward right now, confesses, and tells me who put them up to this... I might consider letting them leave this house with all their limbs intact."

A suffocating silence followed. Every person in the room looked around nervously, eyeing their neighbors, suspicion poisoning the air faster than any chemical.

Maya stood quietly near the back, watching closely. She scanned every face, looking for micro-expressions—the darting eyes, the shallow breathing, the subtle shift in posture that betrayed a guilty conscience.

Her eyes landed on Clara, the daytime nanny.

Clara was staring at Lorenzo, her lips trembling. But it wasn't fear of Lorenzo that painted her face; it was something far more complicated. It was guilt, mixed with an overwhelming, suffocating terror.

Not yet, Maya thought to herself. Let them squirm.
