Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Machine

"Elena Vance disappeared three months ago," Lorenzo said, standing up slowly, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "The police searched everywhere. They assumed she skipped town with embezzled funds."
"She didn't skip town," Maya said, her clinical mind putting the puzzle pieces together at lightning speed. "She went underground. Or... she was hidden. Think about it, Mr. Bolaro. If Elena was embezzling from your legitimate corporate fronts to cover her own massive debt, and your son Nico was set to inherit the entirety of your primary estate under your family trust... who benefits if the baby dies?"
Clara nodded frantically from the floor. "She... she contacted me two months ago! She said she was hiding from federal investigators, but she still had friends in the city. She gave me the dosing caps. She promised that if I helped her keep the baby sick, so you would be distracted and vulnerable, she could restructure the family trust and split the corporate assets with me when you stepped down!"
Lorenzo stood motionless for a long moment, staring blankly at the wall. The betrayal wasn't just professional; it was intimate. Elena had been his most trusted financial advisor for six years. She had helped him launder, protect, and build the very empire that now kept his family safe.
"Where is she?" Lorenzo asked quietly, his voice like the calm before a hurricane.
Clara shook her head rapidly. "I don't know! I swear I don't! She only communicated through an encrypted burner app. She told me to meet her at an abandoned warehouse off dock 14 at midnight tonight to deliver the final progress report."
Lorenzo checked his watch. It was 11:45 p.m.
Fifteen minutes until midnight. The exact hour Nico always spiked his fever. The exact hour the trap was meant to spring.
Lorenzo’s hand dropped to his side, resting heavily on the grip of a customized Beretta pistol tucked into his waistband. He turned toward the door.
"Marcus!" Lorenzo roared.
Marcus appeared in the doorway instantly, weapon drawn. "Boss?"
"Assemble the strike team. Dock 14. We're going hunting."
As Lorenzo turned to leave, he paused, looking back over his shoulder at Maya, who was standing quietly beside the crib where little Nico was sleeping peacefully.
"You," Lorenzo said, his expression softening slightly despite the murderous intent in his eyes. "Lock the nursery doors. Don't open them for anyone except me."
"I'm coming with you," Maya said calmly.
Lorenzo stared at her, dumbfounded. "Are you out of your mind? We're walking into an armed trap with a fugitive embezzler who tried to poison a baby!"
"You're a grieving father and a mafia boss, Mr. Bolaro," Maya said, stepping forward with absolute, unshakable resolve. "You’re going to be operating on rage. You need someone in that room who is looking at the medical facts, the environmental variables, and the escape routes with a clear head. Besides..." She offered a faint, tired smile. "I'm the one who figured out your puzzle. I want to see the ending."

For three seconds, Lorenzo stared at her. Then, a slow, grim smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"God help whoever crosses you, Nurse Ellis," Lorenzo muttered. "Let's go."
