Chapter 7 - Confession in the Dark

Ten minutes later, Clara and Dr. Crane were pushed into the private study by two armed guards. The contrast between them was striking: Crane looked indignant, his face flushed with righteous fury, while Clara looked like she was about to collapse, her knees visibly shaking beneath her floral skirt.

"This is an outrage!" Crane barked immediately, pointing an accusing finger at Lorenzo. "Holding us hostage over the paranoid delusions of a temporary night nurse? I am calling my attorneys the moment these gates open!"

Lorenzo didn't flinch. He walked slowly around his mahogany desk, stepped directly up to Dr. Crane, and delivered a backhanded slap so fast and violent that the doctor spun halfway around, crashing hard against the bookshelves before sliding to the floor with a bloody lip.

"Shut your mouth," Lorenzo whispered, his voice like the grinding of tectonic plates.

Clara let out a sharp, terrified shriek, covering her ears and dropping to her knees on the Persian rug, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Please! Please don't hurt him! Please don't hurt me!" Clara sobbed, rocking back and forth.

Maya walked over, kneeling down beside the terrified young nanny. She didn't use force or intimidation; her voice was soft, steady, and filled with an unexpected, profound empathy.

"Clara, look at me," Maya said gently, placing a hand on the girl's trembling shoulder. "We know about the bottles. We know about the sedatives. If you don't talk right now, Dr. Crane is going to let you take the entire fall for attempted murder. You’ll spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security prison while the person who actually ordered this walks away free."

Clara choked on a sob, looking up with wide, tear-drenched eyes. She looked from Maya to Dr. Crane, who was gingerly wiping blood from his lip, glaring at her with a look of pure, venomous warning.

"He... he told me it wouldn't hurt him!" Clara wailed, pointing a shaking finger at Crane. "He said it was just a mild relaxant! He said Mr. Bolaro was spending too much time focusing on the baby's health and not enough on the clinic's research grants! He said if the baby stayed slightly sick, Mr. Bolaro would keep funding his pediatric immunology lab indefinitely!"

Dr. Crane’s face turned gray. "She’s lying! Hysterical fabrication! You can't believe a word—"

"Shut up, Victor," Lorenzo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He pulled a heavy leather armchair out, sat down, and rested his elbows on his knees, staring down at the doctor. "You were bleeding my bank accounts for research grants by keeping my son on the brink of death?"

"It was brilliant," Crane hissed, realizing the game was up, his professional facade completely crumbling into desperate arrogance. "Do you have any idea how hard it is to secure private funding for genetic neurology, Mr. Bolaro? Millions of dollars sitting in your foundation, while my research was starving! A few micro-doses of a safe pediatric sedative, just enough to mimic an immune flare-up—he was never in mortal danger! I controlled the dosage!"

"You poisoned my eight-month-old son," Lorenzo said softly.

He didn't yell. He didn't curse. He simply looked up at Marcus.

"Take Dr. Crane down to the basement vault," Lorenzo instructed, his voice devoid of all human emotion. "And make sure he stays there until I decide whether to feed him to the fishes in Lake Michigan or hand him over to federal prosecutors who owe me favors."

As two massive guards hauled the screaming, thrashing doctor out of the room, the study fell into a heavy, suffocating silence.
