Chapter 4 - The Enemy at the Gate

The triumph at the harbor was short-lived.
By seven o'clock that evening, the snowstorm had hit Boston in full force, burying the Mercer estate under eight inches of white powder.
Inside the grand estate library, a fire roared in the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. Lily had fallen asleep on the plush rug after dinner, wrapped in a blanket with her favorite coloring books scattered around her.
Claire sat in an armchair nearby, sipping tea, watching Adrian work at his massive mahogany desk.
He had removed his jacket and unbuttoned his collar, his sleeves rolled up to reveal thick, corded forearms covered in dark hair and a long, jagged scar near his wrist—a remnant of his younger, bloody days on the docks.
The heavy double doors of the library creaked open.
Dominic walked in, his face grim. Behind him stood a tall, lean man in a expensive camel-hair coat. His hair was slicked back, his eyes small and sharp like a fox’s.
Claire recognized him instantly from newspaper clippings she had seen in the study.
Liam O’Connor.
The younger brother of Adrian’s late wife, Rebecca. The current leader of the South Boston Irish Syndicate—a faction that had been warring with Mercer Holdings over territorial rights for three years.
Adrian didn't stand up. He slowly set his fountain pen down on a stack of legal documents.
“You’re trespassing, Liam,” Adrian said quietly.
Liam grinned, stepping into the room without permission. He glanced at the sleeping Lily, then his eyes drifted over to Claire, lingering on her full bust and soft hips with a look of vulgar amusement.
“Is this how you respect my sister’s memory, Adrian?” Liam sneered, taking a pair of leather gloves off his hands. “Replacing her with a heavy-set nanny from the Midwest? The whole city is talking about your little display at the docks today.”
Claire’s hands tightened around her teacup, but she kept her mouth shut, remaining still.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits. “If you came here to talk about my household, Liam, you’ve got two minutes before Dominic throws you into the snow.”
“I came for my niece,” Liam snapped, his playful tone vanishing, replaced by a dark, ugly venom. “Rebecca’s family wants access to Lily. You’ve kept her locked in this castle for a year, using her grief to cut the O’Connors out of Rebecca’s trust fund!”
“Rebecca’s trust fund was settled six months ago,” Adrian replied coldly. “Your sister left everything to Lily. You don't care about the girl, Liam. You care about the ten million dollars sitting in her bank account that you need to pay off your cartel debts in Miami.”
Liam took a step toward the desk, but Dominic instantly shifted his weight, his hand sliding inside his jacket.
Liam stopped, chuckling darkly. He turned his head and looked directly at Claire.
“Hey, sweetheart,” Liam said, offering her a greasy, threatening smile. “How much is Mercer paying you to clean his sheets and watch his kid? Fifty grand? A hundred?”
Claire looked at him calmly. “My salary is private, Mr. O’Connor.”
“I’ll give you two hundred thousand in cash,” Liam offered, stepping closer to her chair. “All you have to do is leave a side gate unlocked tomorrow night. Leave the girl in her room. My sister’s mother wants to see her granddaughter for a weekend in Rhode Island. No one gets hurt. You take the money, quit your job, and fly back to Ohio.”
Claire stood up slowly.
Despite her plump frame, despite her nervous heart, she stood at her full height, looking down her nose at the mobster with absolute disdain.
“Mr. O’Connor,” Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that echoed through the quiet library. “You could offer me twenty million dollars, and I wouldn't leave a door unlocked for a snake like you. Get out of this house before I throw this boiling tea into your face.”
Dominic let out a sudden, loud bark of laughter from the doorway.
Liam’s face twisted in rage. He raised his hand toward Claire. “You fat little bitch—”
CRASH!
The mahogany desk vibrated as Adrian launched himself over it.
Before Liam could finish his sentence, Adrian’s large hand slammed around Liam’s throat, driving the lean mobster backward into the stone fireplace mantel with bone-shattering force.
Vases tumbled to the floor, shattering into pieces.
Liam gasped for air, his feet kicking inches off the carpet as Adrian pinned him against the stone with one hand. Adrian’s face was inches from Liam’s, dark, wild, and utterly terrifying.
“You touched my city,” Adrian growled, his voice a guttural roar from the depths of hell. “You threatened my family. And now you insult the woman who protects my child?”
“Adrian... wait...” Liam choked out, his eyes bulging with terror as his face turned blue.
“If I ever see your face on my property again,” Adrian whispered, leaning closer, “I won't just kill you, Liam. I will feed your body to the crabs at Terminal 4. Do you understand me?”
Liam nodded frantically, his eyes wide with the realization that he was seconds away from death.
Adrian released his grip.
Liam collapsed onto the carpet, coughing and gasping for air, clutching his bruised throat.
Dominic stepped forward, grabbed Liam by his coat collar like a sack of trash, and dragged him out of the library, shutting the double doors firmly behind them.
The silence returned to the room, heavy and suffocating.

Claire stood near her chair, her chest heaving, watching Adrian as he stood near the fireplace. His shoulders were tense, his fists clenched, his breathing heavy as he fought to regain control of the darkness that had just consumed him.
Slowly, he turned around to look at her.
